Unfortunately, no. It dove right back in to the sand before I could get a decent picture.

Hunter, I need your expertise once again. One of the LFS has this guy, and they have no clue what it is. I don’t want to bring it home without being able to make sure we can properly care for it, if it’s something we even want. Thanks!

Novaculops halsteadi. It's a type of razor wrasse. They are found over open sand. They will eat motile inverts and flip small sessile inverts.

Thanks. Are they common in the trade? Easy to care for? Reef safe?

Sporadic in the trade. They are available now though. I have found that they don't handle shipping very well, but once settled are fairly hardy. They eat motile inverts and will flip sessile inverts.

Here is my large female Halichoeres wrasse a 5 inches female. Still cannot ID her. Not quite a Vrolikii and not quite a Melanurus either. Some pictures show clearer tail while other show the body coloration and pattern, or Dorsal and Anal fins better

It's looking very much like chrysotaenia to me, now.
