I see so many different lay outs from DIY to custom built to store bought

What is the best idea in your opinion?

Skimmer first, skimmer in the middle No skimmer, huge fuge small fuge, socks No socks

I think you get where i am trying to go, just want to see what everyone thinks about different designs

I'm a fan of open sump design, with the exception of a separate return pump chamber for water level control/not flooding the display/not running heaters dry. In my display, I run a reef mat, skimmer, ATS. In my frag tank, I just run a large fuge since I'm less concerned about filtering out particulates. Both work great, depends on your goal ultimately.

For me its socks first (or fleece roll), then skimmer than anything else.

You can do that but I dont think you'll achieve a silent overflow

@riche - see below for another important aspect if you're going custom.

you might hear it in the roller, other than that the eshops overflow can be tuned and gate valve installed

I’m limited on space (reefer 170) but I like typical sumps, drain, skimmer, fuge and return chambers
Similar here limit in space, live rubble rocks , filter sock, no skimmer and space for corals that I'm not able to have them in the main display due to flow/ space/ fishes

I run a 40 breeder refugium with a small return chamber at the rear corner. No socks just a skimmer
