I’ve never seen a machine like this before. Is this accurate?

Im going to manually test my parameters and see where we match and don’t.

they said Alk needed to be divided by 18 which brings it to 7.6dkh.

I believe this is the API Aquaspin. Not sure how accurate it is.

I just called them. They said aquaspin. I’m about to test and check their accuracy. I personally am very doubtful. Let me check before I make any claims.

We know the ammonia reading is spot on at least here (age of your display reef tank with bioload in place=controlled ammonia always, without fail, does not vary)

if that meter had said .1 we'd have near complete meltdown in the thread. by me

My LFS has one as well and readings with my Hanna checkers seem pretty spot on...

These are, I think, a rebranded LaMotte 3585 photometer. The disks run $150 and are good for 50 tests, multiple parameters on one disk. From what I can tell, these run like a colorimeter, but use dip and read disks as opposed to reagents added to a sample.

I just tested my water. Here’s my results. I tested everything with salifert except for alk which I used Hannah.


Calcium 445

Alk 8.4

Magnesium 1350

Ammonia >0.15

and also add to this mix of params what seneye would read if you tested on that same sample: between .001 and .009 (nh3)

what a range of params we've here today, all on one sample

some readouts need TAN conversion, some don't, multi interferences are possible based on prime dosing done to your system etc. very neat. (your ammonia troubleshoot thread discussed recent prime additions, if that interacts with salifert like it does api reagents tbd but still a factor to consider)

*how can we know what your nh3 reading will be without actually running it on a seneye? Because all reefs post cycle maintain the stated range above, on seneye, and none vary if the machine is calibrated. there arent any outliers is how we know your levels based on your tank pictures from the other thread. you have a post-cycle reef with fish and corals and rocks and sand, and they're alive, therefore we know your working daily range of nh3 happening right now.

I'm also in Miami and this is the same machine used by my LFS, so I wonder if we are going to the same place. I go to Frank Aquariums.

I'll be following this thread as I've been trusting these numbers to be correct and now I'm curious to know if the readings may be incorrect.

I don’t believe in their numbers at all. How can my magnesium and theirs look so different? It’s not accurate. I dosed Alkalinity the other day and API as well as Hannah said it was 8.

I’m so tempted to do an ICP test...but it’s not worth that money. Maybe I can ship somebody a sample of my water? Would anyone like to test water for science? :)

I added a bag of phosguard for no reason last night. I don’t know why tbh. I thought I had higher phosphates. I’m going to remove it.

Yeah I found this thread as well as couple other videos on this machine.
Phosphates didn't show up in a couple with less than .05 so not sure it would be good tool for that or really much else considering findings in this thread seem to be all over the place at 3 dollars a test..

Do you know if these are accurate enough? Spendy, but if close enough seems like a big time saver.

I'm not familiar with this particular machine, but if they use color disks, then almost certainly it is measuring carbonate alkalinity (by pH and CO2, like Mindstream was planning to do) rather than total alkalinity (which needs a titration of some sort).

The difference is small if borate is not unusually high, but they are not identical. Carbonate alk is lower than total alkalinity, mostly due to borate alkalinity.
