Lg. Mushroom Leather not doing well

Hi Guys, New here……I’ve had my toadstool leather for probably 5yrs now, he’s massive and gorgeous and has been the center piece in my 200gal tank and all of a sudden he’s not doing well? Not sure if he’s just old? How long do these last? What could be effecting him….? He gets a nice flow with a sea swirl which passes by but does not blow directly on him constantly…but again….he’s been loving it for years….now all of a sudden…it looks like his melting….? Brown burn marks/dead marks are starting to appear…..HELP…? I’d hate to loose him!!!

I wish I had an answer, but I had something similar happen with mine and after I had giving up all hope, it recovered. I have no idea why. But my brown/burn looking marks were from detritus settling on it when started closing up like that and I guess it started to rot there..

Thanx for the reply, I have great water flow from the back as well as the front, with the front being a SeaSwirl so it moves back and forth from the front of the tank to the side. Should I look up molting for leathers….I didn’t know they did that….so I have not a clue what to look for….?

They definitely molt and shed

These guys like more than "casual" flow. Medium is better usually... I get he's been fine for years, but he might just need a bit more flow.

Any changes in tank parameters, or have you been testing?.... Could be something there as well.

Mine always close up when I clean, or move them, and sometimes take more than a week to get back to normal.

Sadly I lost him…..breaks my heart…….I’d had him for like 5yrs….was gorgeous! The grand Poobah of my tank….I had to bag him up yesterday and get him outta the tank, he was disintegrating just by touching him…..
