I'm a big fan of life rock. I like the way it looks, the price is good. Life rock, live sand, and a bottle of bio spira and you're cycled in a week. No pests, no bubble algae. I have it in 3 tanks.

We had a 55gl tank up and running, and it was doing well...until we wanted some more rock. We found an ad on Craigslist selling off some live rock for a really good price, and decided to buy a few pounds. BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER! We had a HUGE bloom of green hair, and could not control it. We sold off what we could, and left the hobby for 5 years or so. We found a tank many years later, and had it in our dining room for over a year. Looked into dry rock, and it seemed like a really good idea - Like @lion king said, not pests, nothing. We also used life rock. It was so out of our comfort zone, and we had a hard time wrapping our heads around what everyone was telling us about cycling the tank. The cycle took forever - ours actually cycled twice. We phantom fed the tank, and used Brightwell Aquatics MicroBacter7 & Seachem Laboratories Freshwater and Marine Stability. The tank has been up and running since Feb 2016, and in the last couple of weeks, finally saw some bugs running around on the rocks. As of today, our tank is just ok. I'm not overly excited about it. The rock doesn't really look good. We have very little coraline algae, even though we have used Purple Up. Our torch, ducan, hammer, and frog spawn are beautiful, but past that, no other corals will live - Not sure what the problem is, and if it has anything to do with dry/life rock, or not. Our past tanks all had live rock, and all of our corals did beautifully. All parameters are on point. I truly feel that if we would have started with actual live rock, our tank would look much better, and we would be a whole lot happier. So, in my opinion, go with live rock!
