Apparently they are working for the vendors!! They sale almost immediately when priced correctly. Most of them have a big name behind them, which most lfs don't. So basically there are people who enjoy them and people who don't. To each his own, buy what you like and enjoy the hobby!

Some sales have great deals, others not so much. The Joe Knows Reef live sale was awesome for me, He had jf Jackolantern Leptos for $25-40... and tons of other pieces insanely marked down. Where as some live sales I have to think they are doing nothing more than moving tons of product at 5% off in a 12 hr period... I for one am not a fan of the $$$$$ per eye of a chalice that looks identical to tons of others.

"New guys clambering for the stuff", "neophytes", and a lot of "they". They is a four letter word and is synonymous with "you people". This thread has a couple posts that can be considered demeaning. Also, I'd like to point out that a couple of these same posters are "clambering for the stuff". I'd also like to point out that some of these demeaning posts are made by "neophytes". It's all relative and some of you can talk the talk, but not walk the walk and it's evident in some of your posts. I'm just trying to say, let's be a little nicer. We're supposed to be here to help each other. Where will you be after you run all the "neophytes" off? Then you can talk down about yourselves. "Oh, I've been reefing for 21 months and you've only been reefing for 20 months." "So, I'm so much smarter than you are."

I've followed two sales and was very active in the latest RR sale. With that limited experience, here's my take: every vendor should take a serious look at consumer protection laws on representing the "sale" and "original" price. It's illegal in several states to represent an inaccurate original price and I think a lot of vendors put up an "orignal" price for corals when they've never actually sold the coral for that much money (either ever or in recent past) to intice buyers caught up in the hype. Simply put, it's misleading, unethical and it's always a bummer to see it happen. I have a general feel for what corals are worth and I know I got some crazy deals in the RR sale but I feel bad for new comers who could be easily misled. With that said, some of these corals are worth the price they demand and many are even worth their "original" price, IMO. I don't think we should tolerate a "buyers beware" attitude though.

I guess it is how you look at it. I was actually talking about people that signed up to R2R for the live sale not new reefers. I understand that calling someone "new" has negative connotations now but come on. I actually find your post rather insulting. I watch and participate in the live sales. I look for what I think are the great deals. It's my opinion that there haven't been that many great deals lately. It's just my opinion and take it for what it's worth.

No good deals? I see you won a contest in the Cherry Corals sale. Sounds like a good deal to me. You even had all the posts counted. I have to admit I marvel at that. During the Reef Raft sale I bought 3 corals for $5. I bought a Lighthouse Stag that has three heads and is about 3 1/2" long for $15.00. Bought two Chalice, $15. and $10. The most I paid for a coral was 25.00, a Stellata, but I wanted that one. I'd say those are all good deals. After I got my three $5. frags and a few other corals I wanted, my wife and I then went fishing.

Y'all are looking way too far into this, it's just a person with a store showing you a bunch of corals for sale and if you want them you can buy them. That's it, no trickery at all. If your fooled by the word Sale you might as well wrap yourself in bubble paper and lock yourself in the house with no TV or radio. Nobody is being tricked, it's really no different than watching a commercial or listening to the radio. Live sales are supposed to be fun, I had a great time at the last one. I wish I could participate in all of them. I don't usually buy much but do occasionally see something that makes me excited. The great part is that if I can't afford it or don't have time it's just one thread I don't have to click on. I've had a great time with contests and chatting with people during the sales but when it comes down to it the sale is put on by a business and the objective is to make money.

Good job bro. I'm truly happy for you. I'm also excited for the cherry corals live sale. Counting has been one of those things I learned well in school.

The one thing that I observed in the last live sale was that people were having fun. That is a good thing!!
Well here is my personal opinion on all these live sales and the reefers involved in it. First off, its a very clever idea. "live sale" wow. then promotions, half price corals, draw in hundreds of people to the thread. Now comes the real truth. With 500+ possible buyers loaded waiting to buy corals of any kind, and the pushy live sale "salesperson", and a limited quantity of corals show up at one time, chances are they will be gone fast, good or bad, no matter the prices. No offense to the live sale owners, they are strictly here for business, just like in the NFL, no hard feelings, not here to help out a fellow reefer to transform their average reef into a dream tank at a low cost. lol
On the other hand, there are many reefers here also trying to pick up a few rare pieces so they can grow and frag them in a year or two to make their money back. Believe me, they dont just make their money back, they are actually selling their frags for almost the same price as all the vendors without a storefront and all the expenses of a business owner. Those are the worst seller of all. They are the ones to blame for all these jacked up coral prices.
Sadly all these talk about helping nature to restore its original state, or all aquacultured coral hobby is nothing but a phrase with these sky high prices. There are only a handful of people that might have that mindset in this hobby.

I've followed a few live sales and I have seen some good deals a few times.I've also seen many live sales turn into nothing but a "feeding frenzy".No deal at all,more a bragging right kinda thing to see who is quickest at getting the coral.As long as people pay the prices being asked they will stay where there at.

I meant nothing derogatory by using the term neophyte. I believe it sounds better than "newbie" or "rookie." I could say "inexperienced reefer." I could also say "a naive sucker that just got into reefing and is being taken advantage of." Just like Richie T, I find your post insulting. I have been in this hobby for over 8 years. While I don't have live sales, I do sell frags at affordable prices from time to time to help "the new guys" (I hope one of these terms meets with your approval). I also give advice on topics I feel qualified to do so with in hopes of getting "the new guy" established, up, and running. Hope you don't take offense to that, too. Everyone is new at one point or another, some just not as punchy as others.
Another member said it, and it rings true. If you can get the same coral (regardless of what coral it is or what fancy trade name it has) at "Store X", why does "Store Z" ask twice the amount for it? In the end, a smart reefer knows to shop around before pulling the trigger. In my experience, the live sale is a feeding frenzy and the deals are not there, say minus a 5% discount which is negligible when a coral can be close to $1000 for a tiny piece. Bragging rights to say "I got it before the next guy could hit the 'buy' button!" The coral will come down in price within months, and the patient reefer will be able to buy a larger frag for the same price as the original booger sized frag. Or, the patient reefer will be able to buy several different frags for the price of the original booger sized frag. I guess, however, I will have to check out a JF live sale as another poster said his prices were great. Maybe that will help sway me. But until then, it is an overpriced feeding frenzy for bragging rights.
