First time buying a saltwater fish tank… should I start small?

If you just want to try a reef... some coral, inverts and a small fish or two go small!! If you can find a used all in one, that would be a great way to start. Bigger tanks are easier in some ways, harder in other ways - but the stakes and costs are much higher.

If you are looking to keep tangs and bigger fish - this gets you into giant tank territory pretty fast!

I have a friend who bought a 30gal, then decided he liked it and a year later rebought lots of the gear for a 125. I would start at 75-90 gal.

It’s a very expensive hobby, and many people quit after 1-2 years.

I would start with something around 40-50 gallons, knowing that if you like it, you’ll want to go bigger in a few years. But if you don’t like it, at least you won’t have spent as much as with a bigger tank. Unless your budget is unlimited, then sky is the limit, lol !

One way to measure the size of the tank needed is to decide which fish you want to keep. Some fish need very large tanks.
