Getting glass to build a sump very soon but till then, could I get rid of my filter pads and place live rock in my canister ?
 
Absolutely, did it for years. Only downside ( I guess... ) is you might have slightly more particulate in the water column. As long as there's adequate flow it stays suspended in the column and is taken care of.
