The long skinny one in the second picture is a sleeve for the return pipe.
What material are you using? I made rock from portland cement, aragonite and rock salt back in February. I read the ph will stabilize after about a month of cycling it through RODI. I dont know how many thousands of gallons i have cycled thru, but last week i even put citric acid in the water dropping it down to around 5 or 6 and within 2 days it was already over 9 again. UC had marco rock on sale so i bought a couple hundred lbs of that.

I used the same. I've been cycling it for a couple of days and the pH is dropping.
