Mac Help

I'm ready to make the switch from PC to Mac. Current Dell PC is about four years old now and I'm going through almost bi-monthly reformats, not to mention the constant malware attacks.

Any recommendations as to which system would be good for family use? I was surfing around on apple.com and I'm guessing the iMac...with probably 8GB of RAM and 3.06GHz processor.

My current Dell has 3.00GHZ processor + 4GB of RAM and it still lags though, is it going to make a huge difference if I switch to mac? I'm kinda lost with Apple products...help! :crossedlips:

iMac is an outstanding machine. My wife uses one at work (I use a PowerBook), it gets heavy use, and has performed flawlessly for two years. If I didn't need a laptop, I'd own one, too.

We just switched to the iMac and it's excellent. If you have programs that you used for windows only you can still load windows onto your iMac and use windows just line on a PC. You just have to reboot between iMac and the windows platform or you can buy software like Parallel or Fusion so you don't have to reboot.

Once you start using a Mac you realize how boring a PC is. I just don't even like using windows anymore unless I have to.

I don't think you need 8GB of RAM. It's very fast. Unless you are doing some heavy video editing. You can't compare RAM between the Mac and PC. I have 2GB of RAM and it boots up in about 10-15 seconds max.

You won't regret it. Mac is so much easier once you get used to the OS. Everything "just works" I switched about 3 years ago and I will never be a PC again...

The other cool thing about Apple, is you really don't have to keep track of the gigahertz of the processor, I had to check to see what my Macbook Pro was just now because it is fast, and I don't WANT to know all those digits...

I am MAC thru and thru. Never again will I own a PC. They are worth every penny. I am a graphic designer so speed and reliability are everything. My PC used to crash all the time causing me to lose time and work.

If you and your family are not familiar with Mac, it may take some time in getting used to the interface. I suggest taking a Mac class at your local Apple store. Some people may disagree, but there is great benefit in it. I was fortunate to have been trained on a Mac quite sometime ago - haowever - my wife found it frustrating at first to get used to. She couldn't believe how simple it really was, she was just so accoustomed to PC so it took some adjusting. Mac has a lot of nuances that PC doesn't (i.e.: no right mouse click, toggling between open apps, file storage, etc.)

Also, I have to second that notion about the RAM. You absolutly cannot compare specs between the two. 2Gb of RAM is far superior to that of 2Gb of PC RAM. I would suggest the 8 - only because you want to remain a few steps ahead so you aren't second guessing if you should have. Besides, you know how rapid computer tech changes.

PS: I w ouldn't suggest running Windows on a Mac, if thats the case...buy a PC. It stinks that you will lose almost of your current software; and most likely have to upgrade to new stuff, but it's worth it.
