So I have two questions.

What is the best macroalgae for a fuge? I heard chaeto is good but then some people say it goes sexual so I’m uncertain?

And aside from things such as Copepodes and mysis shrimp etc, can you keep anything in the refguium with like chaeto (or whatever macroalgae you guys say) algae, I’d like to keep things like peppermint shrimp, fire shrimp, skunk cleaner or banded boxer shrimp. Ive even heard of people keeping a frogfish in their fuge (course tho it’s not an invert) but I’m not sure 100% what you can and cannot keep in the invert kind of category.

Thanks [emoji1303]

Cheato is probably the best macro as it’s a fast grower. It’s calerpra that goes sexual cheato is used because it doesn’t do that.

As for other stuff in the fuge the sky is the limit, you can really put what ever you want. In my tank at work I grow cheato right in the tank so essentially my display and fuge are together

Hey, I would love to help, but can you provide a little more information about your setup?

  • What size tank do you have?
  • What are the goals you are trying to achieve with a fuge and macroalgae?
  • What size sump/refugium do you have?
  • What kind of lighting are you using/planning for your fuge?
  • What kind of lighting do you have over your display tank?
  • What are your current nitrates and phosphates?
  • Are you running any other forms of nitrate/phosphate reduction such as GFO, Biopellets, Carbon Dosing, water changes?

You’re probably going to think I’m crazy but I’m getting everything ready before so I know exactly what to do but I actually don’t have my tank yet, ik it’s pretty weird to put up loads of forms when you don’t even have a tank yet but I want to find all the things I’ll need before I get into it, sounds funny [emoji23]

The tank I will be getting is a 108g (uk gallons)

The goals are I just basically want it to help out with my tank to get the phosphates and nitrates down (obviously when I actually have it [emoji23][emoji23])

The sump size is 26.5g (uk gallons) and Im not sure exactly but ik the refugium area is a decent size (I could add a photo if you like)

I’m kinda trying to figure out atm what kind of lighting for my fuge because ik chaeto needs certain lighting but cuz I’m in the uk it’s more difficult to find one that is like highly recommended [emoji849][emoji23]

I’m getting an led lighting from the place I’m getting my fish tank and I’m just sorting out with the people what lighting is best for that tank and corals etc

Obvs idk [emoji24][emoji23][emoji1319]

Ah so obviously the person I saw say that chaeto is sexual obviously was incorrect [emoji23] great! I was wondering what the extent was because I didn’t want the shrimps or whatever I put in the tank to get stuck but that’s great if you can put everything in![emoji16][emoji23]

Thanks for your patience! Ive been out coding the website, and now that I'm fixing small bugs here and there, I can come back and help!

If its that big, I would recommend sea lettuce. It grows faster and you can feed it back to the tank.

A photo would be great!

Your fuge light should be somewhat dependent upon the display tank light intensity. For light spectrums, I would recommend either either 5k-6.5k Kelvin or the AI fuge light.

I'm not 100% as to what you have available in the UK

So, your goal is to have inverts in a macro display.

I searched your many threads to better understand your goals and methods. Unless your experience level is more than your threads indicate. I suggest you seperate functionality of your display refugium. Set it up as a display instead of a dual purpose nutrient management for the systems. Because you don’t know your system biological demand, unless your experience level is sufficient, I suspect you will have difficulties managing the dual role you are asking it to do.

Your coral banded will eat your peppermints and the frogs will eat everybody else. Predator prey relationships are a complex balancing act. When you couple that requirement with nutrient management of a system of which you have no real idea of its BOD. I understand your exuberance,

I suggest you get a 10G display of those inverts and maintain it for 6 months. Put the things that you want to see in it without the complication of system nutrient management.
