Use the BRS mixture, its much cheaper and works great.

The Tech M is great for raising Mag to fight Bryopsis, but thats it :) Do it the cheaper way.

Personally, I simply use Epsom Salt.

I probably change more water than is typically considered sane, though. So, I don't concern myself with issues of chloride/sulfate ions. And, fortunately, it doesn't appear to have ever caused any issues.

You mix the two of them together to make the mag supplement. There are two recipes that determin the mix ratio. One is designed for used with Calcium or kalk reactor and the other is designed for 2 part dosing w/o a reactor.

I'm back to using the BRS crystalize magnesium chloride and sulfate and dripping it in overnight. If you're using it to combat bryopsis it takes a very long time to kill it. I had it at 1700 ppm for over a month before it started to die...

Where can I then get mix/dose for Mg two part please?? Pls pm me.

The answer to this has more than one part.

For the first consideration...What is the difference in terms of chemical make-up, structure, etcetera? Unfortunately, I can't help there. This is a "Randy" type question. I'm no chemistry expert. I rely on individuals like Randy to deal with all of the formulae, etcetera. I am relegated to just reading the "conclusions" and "suggested applications" sections.

For the second consideration...What does the difference between the two have to do with me? From my VERY modest level of understanding...accumulation of chloride ions can be bad. So, for the same reason that chronic use of Calcium Chloride isn't recommended, neither is Mag. Chloride. Apparently sulfates and chlorides can "cancel each other out???" As such, a balanced approach to dosing Mag sulf./chl. is typically recommended.

Again, this is way over my head. However, as noted previously...given absurd water change frequencies in my systems, I don't concern myself with this.

My philosophy. Just change all the water. Whatever I have done to screw it up will be rectified. Simple enough.

I use brighwells neomag in my calcium reactor. It works by slowing the drop. Then every 6-8 months or so I dump a 1/4-1/2 gallon of BRS MAG in my sump (all at once, no dripping for me).

Straight from the back of my Mag Sulfate, this is the recipe:

Recipe 1 - For Using 2 part to Maintain Calcium

Add 5 level household measuring cups of magnesium chloride and 3 level household measuring cups of magnesium sulfate to a gall jug with RO/DI or filtered water to create a gallon of solution


Recipe 2 - For Use with Kalk and Calcium Reactors

Add 7 1/4 household measuring cups magnesium chloride and 3/4 household measuring cups magnesium sulfate to a gallon jug. Mix with RO/DI or filtered water to create a full gallon of solution.


Since you are using a calcium reactor, you would follow the second recipe. I suggest buying the large container of chloride, and the smaller of sulfate, since you'll use very little sulfate. I bought the 1 gallon container and I've barely touched it after making several gallons on solution. Doing that will save you money on the sulfate :)

I bought the containers from BRS and the pumps for those containers, and they worked out perfect, and you can't beat the price of them. Also pick up a 500ml measuring cup while you are there do make dosing easy for you.
