Hello everyone, as many experienced reefers know. Caves are important and sometime you need to make some for specific fish.

Well I have an idea, it is to take my rock and drill caves into it. Instead of creating caves with multiple rocks. Has anyone done this? If so can you post pictures?

I have not done this yet. But I do have a 2in Dimond hole saw that I intend to use on a large rock to make a cave.
I intend to drill up from the bottom then from side to create a cave.

Unless they are very small caves, typically a chisel and hammer can be used.
What if i wanted to take a larger 15lb rock and put in a couple caves on it? Do you think this would be okay or would it be many spot within a small area?

I do drill holes fo rcaves but a big problem is rocks often break apart, placing of the holes is critical to avoid frustration or a catastrophe as rocks settle. I also will use a smaller bit to drill smaller rocks to string togehter on and 1/4" or 1/2" PVC to make bridges or arches.

I would imagine the rock would break pretty easily, though personally I’ve never done it. Smaller rocks put together tend to be more helpful for cleaning and if you get coral, keeping it contained. - kali
