I introduced a male to my female a couple of days ago to see if they would pair up. I got a male that was bigger than the female cause I heard that females may kill males that are smaller than her. Well today I found my male dead. His mouth of wide open and he has pale spots spots like he lost coloration along his body and stomach area. I don’t know if my female killed him or what happened I had not seen them fight. My female was actually really interested in him when I first introduced them. The only other fish I have in the tank is a fox face, and a clownfish. Do you think the female killed the male?

Sorry for the loss of your Mandy. Did you get him at an LFS? If so, did you witness him eating?

Yes I have pods seeded in my tank and my female does just fine in the tank. She has been in the tank for six plus months with no issues. I got him from a local fish store. And I supplement with baby brine shrimp and Mysis shrimp that my other fish don’t eat.

How long did the LFS have him and did you witness him eat before you bought him?

No I did not witness him eat before I bought him. Though he looked pretty healthy when I bought him very active. And I believe they got them last week. But I did call my LFS and let them know what happened in case they needed to watch their other fish. And they said they would work with me in possibly getting another.

I'm happy to hear they will work with you!

I would recommend not buying any fish from an LFS without seeing them eat first unless you have a very good relationship with them. Especially with fish that are known to possibly be problematic.

Oh, and welcome to R2R! (Noticed you just joined on Monday.)

Thank you! And I do have a really good relationship with my LFS. They always give their fish time to settle in and eat as well as a period to make sure none are sick or anything before they sell it. This is the first time I’ve ever had a fish die from them so soon.

I have a female blue in my big tank that has killed 3 fish and a small green female spotted in my little tank.
I tried to introduce a male in the little tank and had to net the male out almost straight away because she tried to kill it.
I suspect your female.
