Hey all,

I wanted to share with you my recent re-entry into the hobby. Also, I'm new here, so if I haven't met you yet, here's my introduction: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/hey-folks.263330/#post-3139683, and well...nice to meet you.

I decided when I got back into this hobby that I wanted something easy to take care of. This was because I had gotten a bit burnt out from the hobby due to working at the LFS and going to school full time. I had a 90G tank that had gone from very nice reef tank to ugly reef tank to nice fish only tank to ugly fish only tank to sold fish tank over the course of 6ish years. Well before getting burnt out and selling the 90, I had purchased a 30g deep blue tank at the LFS's going out of business sale. Yep the one I had worked for. I like to think it was because I quit, they couldn't stay in business, lol. I also picked up a radeon G2 for a nice price. So when I finished my exams and got my new big-boy job(that I basically wear PJ's to :p), I decided I was done with the hobby. I didn't even want to look at my tank anymore, but knew in the back of my head I'd want to again in the future. So I sold my 90 before we moved, but kept the 30G. It was way easier to move, and I still don't much regret the decision. Also, it was on the smaller size (I can always upgrade...:D) so water changes are easy.

About a year after moving into the new place (that's about where we are now), I got the itch. I still don't have a ton of extra time, but needed to set something up. So I knew I'd need some kind of auto-dosing, and an ATO would be a must. Skimmer and fuge, so if I get a little lazy on the water change it won't kill me or, more importantly, my new residents. I had a few of the more expensive pieces already so I put the money I had gotten from selling the 90 to work. Apparently, it doesn't work too hard though, cause I didn't get anything too fancy shmancy.

Light: Radeon G2
Tank: 34g deep blue 36"x 18"x 12"
Sump: Aqueon model 1
Skimmer: Reef octopus 110 internal space saver model.
Return pump: Sicce syncra 3
ATO: honestly don't remember. simple 2-float switch, non-name brand. probably 10 years old.
Flow: Vortech MP10
Fuge light: CPR 7w LED
Dosing: two BRS dosers on digital timers.

I test with hannah CA and ALK checkers, but I think I like red sea/salifert style tests better. I'm pretty stable at 450 CA and 8.5-9.0 ALK running the Ca doser for 2 mins twice a day and Alk doser 4 mins twice per day. The Ca and Alk run an hour apart from each other. My solution is just what's on the side of the BRS containers lol. I didn't do any science here. I just test and adjust. At first I had the two equal, but the Ca shot up too fast. It was over 500 at one point. The tank is still pretty new, so I fully expect these times to move way up.

A lot of people don't like the focus of the LED's and would say I need more than one on my 36" tank. However, it provides a nice comfort zone for different types of corals IMO. SPS and clams at the center, LPS at the sides. I love it. I was never able to keep LPS in my SPS tanks before without shoving them in a cave. The only other thing I really want to say about the radeon is that it puts out some serious light. I have it like 20" off the water and only running 65% max for like 3 hours per day. The rest is some smaller percentage of 65%. I had it at 80% or something when I first put it on and a few of my first corals bleached out a bit.

Enough talking, where's the pics?

Under the hood (not as pretty as some people's I know):

Looking good! Great pictures!!

Thanks for looking! I'm still working on that white balance to catch the colors correctly in the pics.

I've been looking for some nice sps corals. I know wwc has their sale going on right now and that frag pack is $260 for 6 really nice corals. Anybody have some favorite sites they'd recommend for sps? I'm not looking to spend $100-$200 plus on a frag, but can do the $50-60 each range.

I would say check out reef pets, Adam at battle corals or gonzo coral. You really can't go wrong with any R2R sponsors.

Great tank! I love your set up, simple and effective. I'm starting a 80g DBP and I'd love to have you follow along and give me advice as I go. Also, what do you take pictures with? All my pics get washed out, but I'm taking them with an iPhone 6 too.

Thanks, I'll start there!

I'll go have a look! I use a Canon rebel XT with the 50mm Canon compact macro lens. I've had it a long time now, and it wasn't new when I got ito_O. It's software doesn't even work on my OS anymore, I have to use the windows photo viewer or whatever it is. Honestly, they probably make point and shoots with better specs these days, but the lens is still pretty good. I'd recommend that as a budget macro lens if they still make them. The rebel line of cameras are a nice intro into the DSLR realm of photography, and where my feet are firmly planted lol. So a newer version with updated features and processor/sensor would probably be a good place to start.

Welcome back to the hobby , I've only been in for a year but it's very addicting. I have a 30 gallon JBJ and must admit I wish I'd gone bigger:rolleyes:. Your tank looks great and your pictures are awesome, looking forward to seeing more.:)

Thanks, Chrisfish! I'm sure I'll have to go bigger eventually too . Hopefully, I'm a couple years out on that though.

Some new stuff came in today, so it's time to share a little :D

I've been playing with the manual white balance lately, I think I'm getting the colors a little better. Thought I'd post some up.

Maybe shoulda posted that in the photography section, might have gotten more interest.

I've been testing my Ca and Alk the last few weeks since I got the new frags. Calcium seems to stay steady at 420-440 while my alk has gone from 9.0-8.3. So I increased the time my alk is on from 4 mins 2 times a day to 5 mins once and 4 mins once a day. It's weird how just the alk intake has gone up. What are people's experience with that? I have noticed some good growth on the Joe and some basing out on the red planet. The tri-color that's in the back and hard to photograph has done a good bit of both. Those were some of the first sps I put in so it seems that they have acclimated well and want to start growing. The newest frags seem to be just hanging out for now.

I've also been thinking of getting another mp10 for the left side of the tank. It doesn't get a whole lot of flow over there. Any thoughts? I don't really want to get something I don't need. Maybe a better idea would be to tee off the return and point one off to the left front. I try to change up the mode on the MP10 or turn it up, but it either ticks the corals off or starts sucking in air from the top. So not 100% sure what to do about that.

I also want to try to get some top down pics, what (inexpensive) tricks do you all use for that? I really want one of those porthole things from avast marine, but i'm not sure it's in the budget lol.

Just found out my Ca dosing pump isn't working. I've been looking at the level of CA in my reservoir hadn't changed. Funny thing is my Ca is still stable last I checked and today are the same at 425. Makes me a little worried about the test kit. Think I might get the red sea one just in case as I'm not a huge fan of the hannah methodology. Those little packets and using RO/DI water is a pain. Alk test seems ok though. I'd rather do titration than the hannah one. Anyways, I chatted with BRS and they are going to ship out a replacement with a return label. Was super easy. A+ for them.

I'll try to get some pics up tonight. No real changes to the tank yet, just growing some corals. Still contemplating the extra flow and maybe turning my lights up a smidge. Turning up the Alk dosing seemed to work just right. Tested yesterday and it's at 8.5, which isn't too bad.

So I thought a growth pic would be fun. I chose joe, cause he's growing the best so far.

The first one is from August the 20th:
689_8975 (2).JPG

And this is from sept. 30th:
IMG_9315 (2).jpg

So just over a month of growth. Not the best I've ever seen, but I did just buy the coral in August, so maybe it was settling in for a while during that time.

Next I'll do the red planet.

Here's from August 20th:

And from Sept. the 30th:
IMG_9319 (2).jpg

Not sure what's up with the PE loss. I didn't notice that until looking at the pic. I'll have to see if it looks like that all the time. Maybe I do need more flow. It has lost almost all of it's green. I think that happens when it is in higher light? Correct me if I'm wrong. I do see a little growth in the limbs, but mostly just basing out.

What do you all think of the growth so far? As expected or slow growth?

Hi obsessed reefer! Thanks for looking and your kind comments! I like the sump for its size/price. It was very tough fitting everything into it. The only good protein skimmer i could find that would fit was the octo that i got. And even though it fits (with some shaving of the base), its in the return pump section so theres bubbles in the DT from it. I havent thought of a fix for that yet. You could go with a sump that doesnt the have a fuge space and have some baffles separating the skimmer from the retun pump. I wanted a fuge though. The sump catches bubbles from the drain amazingly well. I dont think ive seen a better design for that. And the size of the fuge is nice. Theres also room under the socks for some media/rock/whatever you want to put down there. Overall, it was the best thing i could find without going custom and/or paying more. It left some room for my top off water and dosing under the tank. You could get a larger sump if you dont mind those items next to the tank.

Ill get a couple more pictures tonight when I get home from work.
