I am thinking of upgrading my Power Compact lighting to LED, and I am looking at getting a Maxspect Razor system for my 40 gal SPS tank. Anyone have any experience with these units? If you have any other good value LED systems, I'd love to hear about them! Thanks in advance!

Are these lights similar to the ecotech programming with a computer? I've been thinking about this light also.

No they have a built in controller. Very easy to program, they keep them very thin by having a power box like a halide ballast you put under the tank. If you think about it. A single 160W Razor has 48 x 3 Watt Cree LEDs and retail is $509.99. Plus you get hanging kit and mounting legs for it. For 2 AIs you need a controller and some type of hanging kit so you are looking around $1000.00 for all of that.

So I can hang them? Do they program as in the intensity gets bright through the day and fades out or is the time clock click off method?

Awesome I'm sold on one. The deal seems to good to be real. I was going radion because the storm mode is cool but I can live without.

I bought the 160W about 6 mos ago for my mixed reef... I love it. Switched from a 2x250W halide with 4x39W T5's...Love the look, easy to program & everything seems happy. I did have some initial coral loss but that was my fault. Definitely worth the mone. I thought the same thing about the storm mode but that isn't worth $250 to me

+1. went from 2 AI Sol Blues to 2 120w Razors on my 105g and couldn't be happier. Great light, easy to program - I am actually using one of the built in program cycles - literally a plug and play light.

I have one over my 40br and LOVE it! Its the 27" 16k 160w. Can't comment on how corals like it because I'm early in the cycle but the programing is great and the range of white to blue you can achieve is really nice.

This, plus they use slightly newer LED's and have a better spectrum.

We own two 120w razors 10k for our 90 gal and the lights have been fantastic with easy programming! Very sleek design and quality Cree 3w LEDs can't beat it for the price. I agree about the radions, storm mode isn't worth the extra money.

Ive been looking for the specs listed some place to support the 3 watt per diode number. Do you have a link?

No link (sorry) but I thought I read they were 5- and/or 10-watt chips running at lower power.

I'm no expert, but I think the Maxspect's 120-watts of power works out to >3-watts per LED, and I don't think 3w LEDs get driven hard like that.
