When it comes to the nano version of maxspect razor its effective coverage is probably more like an 18 x 18 area.

For a 36x18 tank, will 2 units be sufficient to greatly minimize shadowing/dark spots? or would it take 3 units?

I have one of the 160watt maxspects over a 32in tank, and I absolutely would NOT want anything smaller. In fact in addition to my maxspect, I have added a kessil 160we that is at an angle to help with some of the shadowing. While I am very happy with my lighting now (adding another angle really helps with the shadowing!), I must admit I like the color of kessil better than my razor.
