Are you using lye?
No. I stopped that trash. lol. I never liked lye because it’s such a hassle since it can’t be made to a stronger concentration and evaporation limits how much you can possibly add.

So here’s the method:

For alkalinity I use sodium hydroxide (use caution when handling). When mixed to the correct concentration, it will have equal effects of alkalinity added as BRS Sodium Bicarbonate & Sodium Carbonate HOWEVER, it will have the same ph effect as kalkwasser (per unit of alk dosed).

So basically it’s a super concentrated kalkwasser but without the calcium added in, and without needing to dose a lot of diluted solution which won’t be able to support an SPS tank long term. I use Calcium Chloride for the second part.

Then optional: I use Balling Part C to keep minor elements in ratio of natural sea water.

I use BRS 1.1mL/min with Polyethylene tubing which works for each of the solutions.

For me, it’s a perfect solution. And nothing is perfect. I do need to maintain 3 parts, but I do find it easy and comfortable to do.

Good morning guys!

Yesterday I bought 15lbs of KP rocks for my display tank to add biodiversity. They look absolutely scrumptious.

I put a glass cup as a trap with some food inside to catch the gorilla crabs, but I accidentally caught a bristle worm. I’m going to add it to the tank.

Those rocks really look like they’ll sprout some unusual life!
If only I could find LR that isn’t old…

Tank update. It’s so dirty looking.

I am not allowed to remove the dang paper. I added the beautiful KP rocks yesterday and I did a water change today.

I cleaned my skimmer and filter socks. I so badly want to scrape the glass and soak my powerheads in bleach. I miss working on my tank. I miss seeing the bottom half.

This Friday the cabinetry should be 100% completed. The carpenter is painting the frame and the doors in his house. I. Can’t. Wait.

Small update: the frame and top cabinetry should be fully finished tomorrow (as well as removing the danged curtains. The bottom doors will be done the day after.

Your fish are going to miss your cabinet guy after he's done...

I saved this little mandarin from the LFS today. He’s so malnourished that I wasn’t even sure he would survive in my care because he’s EXTREMELY skinny. I put him in a tiny vase with a female mandarin that I purchased (they were in different tanks). I am feeding them a lot of tigger pods. At first only the female was eating, but now I see the male eating too.

He looks beautiful, hopefully they both thrive and I’m sure they will in your care!
