Missing fish

What are the most common reasons for fish to seemingly disappear, and what’s the longest y’all have had a fish disappear for and then show up?

I have three little eviota gobies and two have gone MIA today, which is very unusual for them — they’re usually always out and about and visible. All three were there yesterday, then today just one.

They did hide when first introduced, and I did some maintenance on the tank y’day afternoon, during which I saw all three of them. I didn’t really notice if they were out between then and this morning. But all day today there is only one that I can see. They usually all come out at feeding time and swim in the water column w/my clowns and blenny, so it’s def not normal.

I checked the sump just in case they went through the surface skimmer vent, but didn’t see anything. And I checked w/a flashlight around the tank in their usual hiding spots. Nothing.

As of now I’m just figuring hey may be hiding very well. But at what point should I be really worried?

I have had a few fish go missing, fire fish went missing for a week and then showed up, was hiding in rocks I assume. I have also had a wrasse gone missing but sadly found him on the floor dead. But gobies are known to hide to they may be hiding ‍️

I have 2 diamond gobies in my 210 with a huma huma and bird wrasse. Needless to say the diamond gobies hide a lot. Longest I’ve gone without seeing them is 2 months or so but can tell they’re in their by the tunnels they make under rock work.

Hope they’re just hiding. These guys are very small, like 1”, 1.5”, so it’s very much not impossible for them to be well hidden.

It just feels odd that I keep seeing the same one out and about all day but not the other two. I fed the tank again a few hours ago, and only that one came out to eat — still no sign of the others.

I hope that they turn up eventually.
For now, I have had a TON of missing fish incidents (This is what happens when your tank is heavy goby territory). Many times there’s been a missing fish incident, it’s usually one of the gobies. What makes it hard is how usually I only see 1-2 of the gobies out at once. My worst missing fish incidents have been with the Griessinger Goby and my Yasha Goby. The yasha vanished for a week and the Griessinger vanished for 8 or so days. Both of them came out and still reside in the tank happily, they just seem to vanish every so often for a day or two, I assume to add more to their homes.

I have no new photos of my yasha, I am not going through another cyano phase (I would be EXTREMELY annoyed if I had to do that again).

This makes me feel a little better, thanks. I did some fairly aggressive glass cleaning, and moved some corals and macroalgae around prior to them going missing, so I’m really hoping they just got spooked and are hiding really well in the rocks somewhere. It feels unsettling to keep seeing the one, but not the other two.

That’s great news!
It’s always a fright on your first missing goby. Or even a goby that others have said will vanish for a couple days just to reappear (Much like the yasha goby). My yasha was on a streak of 2 years and no hiding, then he vanished out of nowhere. That was my biggest shock when I got into gobies, but now I study their behaviour in captivity and do get used to if they’re a regular hider (Griessinger being a good example of one).

I’m missing 2 fish in my Max S400. Received a McCoskers wrasse 3 weeks ago. He was already quarantined, so I acclimated him then put him in tank, he immediately went under the rocks haven’t seen him since. Then just 2 days ago after redoing some aqua scape (removed a large Pukani rock and moved a large shelf rock from sandbed higher up. Now my swissguard basslet who was very shy and would hide under the shelf rock during day. Has gone missing. My flame angel would chase her but nothing too serious. I have checked overflow and sump nothing. The basslet has been in tank almost 6 months. Any ideas?
