Today I switched to the Proportional Consumption Reef Keeping System (RKS).
I am using the All-in-One Proportional Consumption Reef-Keeping System (RKS) 4x5L Set, and my current parameters are: ALK 7.1, Ca 440, Mg 1440. How should I raise my alkalinity (ALK) to 8.0? Should I dose larger amounts of all the equal parts, dose only KH-1 and KH-2, or simply add a separate alkalinity supplement? Can anyone help? Thanks.

Couple of questions:

What are you switching from ( 2 part/ Kalk or something else)?

Also are you using the blue version or Black 7.7?

Kh of 7.1 is accually pretty good. I would try to shoot for a bit higher maybe 7.5 and keep it there!!. Acros love the mid 7s!!

I'm using the blue version; I switched from ONE-4Reef.
2 ways:
- Get the kh+ and raise you Kh to where you want it without altering the other elements.

- dose all 4 in the same ratio to elevate your kh and watch your CA level. Test every other day and see where its at.

I would raise kh to 7.5dkh first and then test CA and see where its at. It should not jump that high anyways( maybe 460 tops)

Magnesium is no issue as it takes alot of it to move the needle.

Thank you very much; I'll give that a try. I’ve reread all the articles from Modern Reef, but there are just a few points I don't quite understand—for instance, the fact that I only dosed 8 mg of Complete Reef Food for a 230-gallon tank.

Where did you see that?? The dosage has nothing to do with how big or small your tank is. Is solely about how much Base Calcium you dose every day.
The formula would be:
(Base CAL daily dosage) x 0.02 = CRF daily dosage for the Blue Classic RKS

So if you are dosing for instance 30ml a day of base CA your dosage of complete reef food would be:

30ml×0.02= 0.6ml

That stuff is concentrated so dont over dose.

That formula should apply to polyp pop as well!!

I have been dosing TM Phos Feed, and I am now switching to the Modern Reef All for Reef with CRF and PP, should I discontinue TM Phos Feed dosing?

Has anyone mixed CRF and PP to save a dosing head
Yes I dose them mixed together but by hand.

With the doser you need a stirrer to store thrm before they get dosed every time. They call for them to be shaken vigorously for dosing consistency . Even more important to do so when mixed together so a stirrer is s must.

Modern Reef says to dose PP when lights on and CRF when lights out, if you combine the two when do you dose?

To be honest. I dosed mine separate then and combined now 2 hours before lights out.

There are few biological reasons for feeding in general towards the end of the photoperiod.

Hi, I have question to those who are using Modern Reef.
What are you using to control Nitrates and Phosphates when using RKS ?

The first line of defence for me is water changes but before that I always try to find the source of why I have high nutrients.

If I lack nutrients then I just feed my fush heavy .

Now if those solutions above are not something I want to do then I use thier N+ and P+ for nitrates and phosphates elevation. Or I use carbon dosing C+ to lower nitrate and phosphate together at the same time.

Do users still use Activated Carbon in sump or not with Modern Reef?

I know Rks method dosn not recommended but I personally still use it but only if I feel like my water need a bit polishing of after water changes or when I bubble scrub my tank( coral slime and maybe coral warfare).

So yes I use it periodically. Make sure to use CAC carbon since its gentle on your trace elements.

What is the data supporting that claim?

Not sure if there is some scientific data out there but I used to use CAC carbon continuously and I do not dose any separate trace elements besides what comes with modern reef RKS set and my tank is doing amazing!!.

Also my ICP tests come back as normal as when I used Reef moonshiners elements and I was not using any carbon back then.

Real life experience is what I go by. My tank is a living proof of that and I keep it as simple as I can.
