I have a reefer 170 G2 and I was wondering if I should go with one MP10 or one MP40… my two concerns are if the MP10 will hold well enough on the side glass at .5 inch thick and is the MP40 going to way over kill even on the lowest of settings.

thanks

It seems to me you can’t use the 10 because of the thickness. The 40 would be big on a 2 ft tank. I’d look at something different.

I agree with dwest. A MP10 won't work because of glass thickness and the MP40 would be overkill.
My suggestion for a quality powerhead would be maybe a pair of the smaller Tunze pumps.

I had an MP10 on my RSR 170. It was perfect!

After you figure out the glass thickness issue, my recommendation would go MP40 and bring WAY down for flow. I am unimpressed with the Mp10s. For the extra 100 bucks, yoiu get a lot of options with the MP40. only REAL benefit I see in the MP10 is the smaller profile hitting in smaller places.

Mp10 works fine. I have been running 2 of them on a reefer 170 for 3 years. Granted they will fall off if bumped but if you have them aligned properly and clean the glass inside and out first I have never had one fall unless bumped. I run both of mine on the back wall. One my or may not be enough depending on what you have as far as corals. If I were only going with a single power head I would do mp40. Sure it's over kill but you can dial it down. I tried one with an mp10 because I had a spare and had to turn it down to 15% so I just went back to 2 mp10s.

I just bought a used 2014 model mp10w yesterday for my IM lagoon 25. It can definetly move water, I would not be concerned about flow.

I have an mp10 on a reefer 170 for 4+ years and it definitely doesn't just fall off if bumped, it takes some force to get it off. Unless the newer ones have increased glass thickness or the mp10 has weaker magnets(wouldn't surprise me with how things are becoming more poorly made in the name of profits)

The g2 170 does state 1/2” glass thickness. I have no idea what the older versions have (never had one). But this is the main issue to consider.

I like the fan set up. Care to share details?
Cheap, clip-on Amazon adjustable fan. Works very well! Hooked up to my Apex. Would come on when temps got to 80 degrees.

Thanks. I have a single clip on I use in the summer but it's not as adjustable as that dual set up. I like the fact that it's low voltage too in case I drop it in the tank. My single is 120 volts. Nice tank!

Wow, that's a big upgrade in glass thickness, I think my reefer 350 front glass is only 1/2" and it's at least twice as wide

i agree,

i'm running an MP40 and a couple gyre pumps on my 36" long 75 gal NUVO and the MP40 is great. my 2 MP10's would just fall off the sides so went with the MP40. No regrets. I have a couple IM wave makers in there too and those pumps are a royal PIA to clean. The MP's are the easiest and quickest to clean on the market.

running my MP40 on nutrient export mode thru Mobius (half speed->3000 gph). could go stronger too

my tank is 20H x 36L x 24W

The only complaint I have on the mp40/, I can’t dial them down far enough. At 5% lagoon and still getting bursts at 1800 gph
