Mp40 dry side hot!

Was experimenting with some flow settings on my MP40 last night. It has been on 100% reef crest for a couple years with no issues.
I set it to 100% pulse to try and get a standing wave going and after a half hour or so, the dry side was getting really warm. Not hot enough to burn yourself, but easily 130-140f. Doesn't seem right?

Set it back to reef crest and temp went back down after awhile.
I know the pulse is a lot higher load, but the pump shouldn't be getting hot like that, should it?
 
I had a similar experience with a hot dry side and couldn't figure out what was wrong. I eventually found that the power supply was on the way out and causing the hot run. Changed the power supply and it now runs cool. I probably should have measure voltage, but I didn't. I don't buy Ecotech power supplies. Here's the Amazon link of the power supplies I last purchased. I typically purchase three or so....I have a bunch of MP's. Just make sure your old power supply is the same voltage and at least the minimum wattage....it's just fine if the rated wattage is higher, but you don't want it lower.

I am bringing this thread back to life- has anyone experienced a very warm to hot MP40 running at approximately 70-75%? Is this ok or will it make the pump fail?

I had a spare power supply from a prior one but that didn't help cool it down. Will the pump be ok or should I just purchase one from amazon that is in a post above? I guess I could always return it easily if it doesn't solve the problem.
 
Just touched the side of mine and holy moly I thought I was going to burn myself. Similar situation to op, swapped from reef crest to pulse and boy did this thing heat up. Currently a single MP40 is circulating my 150 lagoon at 65-75%.

Any device will be negatively affected by increased temperatures, the question really is to what degree. Car engines get hot but with proper cooling they will last for a long time. I do not consider a plastic shroud to be an effective heat sink and apparently the aquarium itself does little to cool the device. It has always been recommended to me that any pump should not be utilized past 70% or the lifespan would drop significantly. My unit is fairly new at roughly a year and a half time in service and I find it incredibly unlikely that my power supply is faulty. To be certain I measured the voltage and got 32.16V which is within the tolerance for the provided power block.

Personally I am going to swap back to reef crest and maybe take a shot at pulse again if I decide to add another pump in the future.
 
Im inclined to agree, especially one pump or two opposing pumps trying to shove all the water in a short period of time is demanding. Additionally I think running at a constant speed puts a fairly constant load on it which is typically good for a motor. I'm going to throw mine on constant at 75% and use my ir camera on it so I can see some actual numbers.
 
My Mp40’s gets very warm on any of the radical surging style programs. I just don’t use them
