My Amazeballs Goni is Sad

Mine closed up for a year, almost dead. Then I moved it to my softie, no-water changes, high nutrient tank-- and opened up almost immediately!

Anecdotally, the reason I moved it was watching Reefdudes mentioning that amazeballs do not like other gonis in the tank with it. And it is the only goni in my softie tank. try moving it to a tank without any other goni and see if that opens up for you.

Another anecdote is from Chris Meckley mentioning moving LPS when dying on a higher nutrient system and it seems to revive them.

Great info thank you for that! So I checked on it again today and it’s looking better than it has since this issues started.

Alright fellas. Few weeks have passed and here is an update! The coral continues to get better and better each day. I definitely think we’re on the right path here. I haven’t changed anything I. My routine. The amazeballs is only a foot away from the other goniporas and I’m thinking back and things kinda started getting better after a moved it off to the side so there is that. It’s only a Nuvo 20 so being that it’s a nano tank there isn’t anywhere really to get away from the other gonis. I’ll continue to update.

So I don’t have photos attached but to those of you who are following, the coral has completely closed back up. Hasn't been out for days now. The flesh has even become discolored. But this time I have a hypothesis as to what’s causing those coral to lose its mind.

I went out of town last week and left the tank on auto pilot. Due to nobody being in my home, the CO2 levels in my house went down which lead my pH to go up in the tank. I usually sit around 8.2 pH but while I was gone went up to around 8.4 pH which is not a bad thing at all. However, I got home and noticed my Witch’s Hat goniopora was closed probably due to this pH swing along with the Amazeballs. Now I have heard that some people believe the Amazeballs is sensitive around other gonioporas.

MY HYPOTHESIS
I’m thinking that the Witch’s Hat got stressed and released toxins or some kind of goniopora juice which caused that amazeballs to freak out and shut all the way down again. You may think that the Amazeballs shut down because of the pH swing alone and I would agree with you but this coral looks like it was torched by a butane lighter, not just kinda going dormant until it figures its life out. It’s something different. I don’t know just my thoughts on the matter..

So today I woke up and saw we’re back to full clench over here. I literally just posted after a few months of great recovery and now it’s fully inverted. Nothing has changed recently. Haven’t done a water change in about five days, regular feeding, no house cleaner this week so no chance of anything getting into the tank. I mean the glass is even dirty so I haven’t had my hand in there in days. Every other coral is business as usual. I’m starting to think this is the way Amazeballs works. Funny think is even though it’s been having a rough few months, the flesh has expanded down on to the peg. This coral started with like ten polyps and has been in a rough state for the last few months the but still continues to spread.

Other gonis in the system still? I do genuinely think that is the problem

Oh yea they’re in there doing 10/10. They been doing 10/10 and the Amazeballs has been recovering right beside them with no problems. Overnight now we have an issue. I don’t know what they could be doing.

Sounds right I think its possible to keep them with other gonis but they will continue to get stressed out whenever the others release whatever it is lol. I think running carbon is really the only thing todo when it happens.

Yea I change out carbon about every 2-3 weeks. I changed the beg right when I saw this today and did a 2 gallon water change.

Sure did. It decides to close up like this every few months for some reason. When it does, I do a massive water change and replenish y carbon media. Seems to come right back the next day.

That’s great to hear. Mine started doing the same thing and got to the brink of death too before seemingly to bounce back slowly. What a finnicky coral….

It actually happened last week. I’ve been trying to pinpoint what causes it but I got nothing. I even checked lunar phases reaching at something haha.

Man that’s stunning!

I ended up pushing mine through the bandsaw when it did what yours did, and although the frags showed signs of recovery and did almost entirely recover about a month after, unfortunately I eventually lost all 4 frags to fireworm.
