My Devil's Hand Lether coral has been developing strange white spots. I'm not sure whats been causing this. It's my second coral. The tank has been up for 4 or 5 months. The tank has no fish with only a few snails.
Parameter
- alkalinity = 7.5 (in the process of raising to 9)
- phosphate = 0.04
- Salinity = 34.6ppt
This is the spots (don't worry about the colour because the photo was done early in the morning with only sun light on the coral)

Not sure if this could be related but it has been a week since the spots arrived on the coral and it has only gotten worse but I did find whatever this thing is on the coral. It's small orange with a spot in the middle.

I have seen this guy come of my live rock 2 months ago and sometimes wake up to find it has moved somewhere across the rock scape or disappeared for a few days. No idea if this could be doing anything to it or if the spots are a part of shedding :).
Here he is on my live rock the first time I saw him

Thanks all :)

What are the rest of your parameters.? What is light and flow for it? I've chopped my devils hand down to nubs and they just grow back.

I haven't tested my other parameters. The lighting is good. I have 2 Red Sea Reef LEDs and it is placedin the upper middle to lower top of the tank. And have placed it in direct flow of my pump about 1 m away from it. I gave it a gentle scrub with a tooth brush and most the lumps fell off. Looks better but still the polops haven't come back.

I've actually tried to pull mine out and get rid of it but it's will to survive was impressive. They are pretty darn hardy. Just make sure you run carbon if you have leather corals due to turpenes.

From what I see, possibility of low nitrates/phos and a lack of flow. You need medium flow towards them to keep waste and sediment off of them and prevent skin from forming a film. Additionally moderate light and occasional iron and manganese in the water.
If you see holes, it may be shedding in which it drops frags of itself and forms babies which grow into new mushrooms.

The skin will still form a film. It's how they shed and flow won't prevent that. To low of flow and it won't shed properly. Med to med heavy flow should be sufficient. They will also able to take a broad range of par.

That is what i stated. Medium flow needed. Ive never had leather not fully open other than in the morning after lights out.

I have placed flow on it over the past few weeks along with scrubbing off the white spots. The coral still isn't looking good. The stem of the coral can no longer hold the hand up and it has flopped over onto the rock it's sitting on. I think i will just let it sit and will send an update if it gets any better or worse.

Give it a few gentle bursts with a turkey baster which May perk it up.

They are extremely hardy but if it goes down hill they take well to fragging.
