My Euphillya are not extending anymore! Please help!

Thank you so much guys, for everything.

I’ve just came back from work, almost 2 days without po4 resin and ATS.
The corals are slowly opening again (especially the soft ones)!
I will check po4 asap to see if it is raising a bit.

The LPS are still pretty closed but better than past days.

Hey man, do you have any updates? I am facing a similar issue, I printed a sump atachment to hold perlon filter, it is there for about 3 months. At this time, I lost 3 hammers colony and 1 trumpet. Another trumpet, the last one I bought, lost almost all its tissue in a month. My zoas are not expanded as when I bought them.

My parameters are stable in this period.

Tank age 5 months

230 liters(60 gal)
In the sump, I have Skimmer, Perlon, and Biologic media.
Added activated carbon 3 weeks ago to check if it can help. (planning to use it always now)

I removed the carbon this week to try the cipro antibiotics treatment (found here in the forum), I added all the 3 doses, and I did not see any improvements. Maybe the printed party is leeching toxins into the water.

KH 7.8
Ca 395
Mg 1320
No3 4
Po4 0.03

Hope your tank is better now. Regards.

Hi there!

My tank is currently doing quite well, all the corals (LPS and soft corals), except for one Euphyllia (the most sensitive one I have), have gone back to fully extending again.

To achieve this result, I did 3 things:
  1. I permanently removed the ATS filter I had 3D-printed in PETG, and I noticed a significant decrease in the skimmer’s activity (it used to go crazy before when the ATS filter was in the sump).
  2. I raised the phosphate level to 0.2 mg/l by removing the phosphate-removing resins I had. I truly believe that having phosphate at zero was the main reason the corals stopped opening — they simply couldn’t feed.
  3. I put some carbon too, and I keep it changed every month
The only one still partially closed is a Euphyllia, but I believe it’s an issue specific to that coral. I’m planning to give it some antiparasitic dips.

I hope my experience can help you solve your issue, and that things get better soon.

Let me know,
Stefano.

P.S.
Remove asap that 3D printed holder and double check of what material is made of, remember that PLA filaments are toxic.

Thanks, Stefano, for the reply.

Yes, I forgot to mention that I used black PETG, but the brand is not very reliable. So I removed all the printed parts and added activated carbon. I will post the positive or negative update in a few weeks.

Best regards,

Thiago Petrellio.

Yes, I read that color dyes for PETG can be toxic too, maybe that is the cause.

Try to raise a bit your PO4 by the way, sometimes tests are wrong and a 0 can be a 0.03 or near that.

Ah and of course I did a 40% water change after.

Keep me update.
Have a good day.

Stefano.
