My SPS & Clam Tank

Well that was totally humiliating.

Great.

I did mention I disliked blastos…

Pics from the month the tank was born: April 2022.

I plan to take an updated FTS tonight.

Surprised you’re not running a gyre type powerhead. I see your tank and see gyres 🤔

Nope. Never had gyres. I did test one out, and it was disappointingly weak. All four of my Jebao SOW 20 have a total of 21,132 gph, and I’m nearly maxed out on all of them.

I would go higher, but the LPS are already holding on for dear life.

These two maxima clams haven’t had decent growth in a while. I’ve tried being patient and adjust the lighting in hopes of stimulating something, with very little success.

The mantles were kind of folded. I don’t know if it’s PMD, but after months of waiting, I figured it’s time I act.

These clams are relatively older and have collected a lot of life on their valves: sponge, algae, brittle stars, vermitids, and bristle worms.

They are currently in a 30 min freshwater dip. I took RO/DI, put it in the microwave in increments for a 1 minute, stirred the water well to distribute the heat, and got it to 79 F.

Nothing special or fancy. No pH adjustments.

I added some photos of the indentation one of the clams created between the efflo and happy glamper acros.

Is the FW baths purpose to help clear off the mantel? Sorry I know nothing about clams and curious.

It kills the Protozoa that causes pinched mantle disease. I don’t know if these clams have it, but their mantles were folded weirdly. To me, it looked concerning.

At this point I feel like I have nothing to lose. FW dips are low risk. If they start getting good growth again, that would be a great learning experience. It’s good that I’m doing it to 2 clams. A slightly larger sample size is always better.

We’ll see. At the very least, we’ll know how clams react to FW dips.

Can’t sleep. Meds causing pretty bad insomnia lately. 🫤
That's the worst, i went through a really tough patch of it last year.
On a positive its when I painted the most haha!

I tried taking it much earlier today. I think it’s helping cause it’s 1 am and I’m starting to feel tired.

I haven’t been feeling so good today, so I think that’s why I’m up late tonight in particular. I don’t think it’s due to insomnia tonight.

The tank is super cloudy this morning because the trochus snails are spawning.

Have you had any trochus survive and grow out? Mine have spawned a few times but yet to find any baby trochus yet 😢 yours spawn in the morning? Weird, mine always right before lights of.

Oh yes. Many, many generations of trochus snails are in my tank. The spawning event always occurred at night, and ozone in particular made them spawn like clockwork.

I have to use guards on my return pumps because the larvae would settle in the sump. Lots of little tiny baby snails would be everywhere, including in my chiller line.

Not anymore, of course.
