my upgrade journal/journey

well, i dont think the transfer will happen this week. was planning on doing it tomorrow and just found out that my parents are coming for the weekend for my birthday! yay! but dont feel like being in the middle of that while i have company. but i did get a bunch of water made and satisfied myself by putting different stickers ive collected on the inside of the cabinet door!

wow i wish this were behind me!

This is probably for the best, honestly! Every new tank setup seems to end up rushed in the excitement, and things often get missed!

Consider it an opportunity to catch your breath, and really do some careful deliberation on the final moves!

For example, things like measuring and making sure your electrical outlet(s) aren’t going to be blocked by parts of the stand, sump, plumbing, tank, or canopy! (Don’t ask me how I know! 🙃 )

im planning on getting some of those orange/ red colored pickle barrels to make water in. do i just rinse them out good with tap water? i think its just basically vinegar in them from the pickles. they have nice screw on lids

Yep. Rinse, drain, repeat.

Pickle juice residue in small amounts won't harm your fish tank.

i need one of you smarty pants to explain something to me. why does it take so little of a bump to chip glass? i keep reading different posts of people moving their tanks or whatever and bumping it against something with very little force. and it chips the tank! why? i know glass breaks but why so easy?

Because of science and physics.

It’s a matter of pounds per square inch!

Usually these chips occur when a sharp 90 degree corner (very small surface area of glass) has a significant point pressure applied to it!

It’s all physics… but basically, a glass tank is heavy; it resists changing in motion, if it hits an object (especially a dense, immovable one, like the corner of a steel frame/etc), it’s a bit like you’ve just taken a hammer and tapped that sharp corner of the glass…

— basically, you end up with thousands of PSI on a TINY surface area of glass; subsequently making a spall chip! (Google “spalling” for more info on the phenomenon; it’s common in concrete, too!)

— a less brittle material usually handles this impact pressure, deforming instead of fracturing!

Here’s an excellent real-world example from my own research!

12mm (~1/2”) thick standard float glass — fine diamond abrasive blade (for glass/ceramic) on left, coarse diamond abrasive blade (for natural stone, porcelain) on right:

That's what I said! Science and Physics!

Likely.

Nah, get some pods and Phyto on a repeat delivery or find locals that sell them?

A couple of times a month after dark, put it in the sump? Or white worms, feed the tank on one side and then drop some in front of the mandarin on the other side of the tank.
