For the most part, it all comes down with sheer luck. I currently have one firefish and one purple firefish for about three months that only darts into their holes. Two weeks ago, I purchased two yellow watchman gobies only to find them on the side of the tank baking for a tan. Keep a lookout for any aggression in your tank for compatibility.

In my 12 gallon Mr Aqua Tridacna Clam tank - I have an orchid dottyback, Bangai Cardinal, Rainfordi boby, and a yellow clown goby . Those seem fine. Definitely don't get a tailspot blenny - all 3 I got jumped within 1 day. I personally didn't want to put a screen on it because I liked the top down look on my clams.

something has to be going on, maybe something is spooking’em, mantis maybe? Strange because I have a few known jumpers in my 525 red sea (uncovered) and none (knock on wood) have jumped

I've had my Royal Gramma for almost a year and I don't have a Lid. Also have a tailspot blenny that has never jumped, had him for about 2 years . My other fish I have had about 6 months, a large Bangaii Cardinal, never jumps.

As most everyone has said, fish jump. Get a 1/4” mesh kit from BRS. Anything else has issues really

Another thing to consider, Do you have enough rock in your tank that the fish feel safer hiding down under the rock then they do jumping out to the next 'tide pool'?
They are not smart enough to realize the next 'tide pool' might be a 1/2 a mile away.

Do you have enough rock that everyone gets their own home?
I realize it's a nano tank.
Some dry rock is riddled with holes and your fish are small enough that they could hang out in different holes.

That Dottyback is an absolutely beautiful fish!
But it is not going to do you any favors with the rest of your fish.

Any fish can jump. But 3 out of 5 says there's something else going on.

Cardinal fish rarely jump, especially pajama and bangaii. They are not very aero-dynamic. I kept pajama cardinals in my seahorse tank without a lid without a problem.

I would agree the the Dotty back is helping those fish decide to jump

A fish will jump in any direction when threatened or startled, into a overflow box, onto the floor and sometimes just dried up laying on a canopy. The dottyback is my best bet as for the reason why you fish jumped out. A dotty will intimidate and be very territorial in a small environment as to their nature. After bullying one, he then goes for the next fish like a cage match. Clowns behave similar and also very territorial protecting the little space they claim. Now if all your fish jumped I might think stray voltage is shocking them to jump, or they were trying to get to the party Nemo was having in his tank. Maybe you can try flying fish, LOL!

Thanks for all the comments!
My temp is very high for some reason. I live up north and during the summer we like to keep the windows open to have the warm vibe. Once it’s colder it’ll drop to 78. I don’t think I have enough hiding spaces for my fish that could be one reason. I think it’s all luck honestly my 3 fish have jumped out of less than 1/8th inch gaps in my tank which sucks. I think I’ll go with a blenny or a goby shrimp pair or a cardinal fish. The orchid is to pretty and personable to take back to the fish store.
