Hello R2R!

I first want to say I really enjoy everyone on this form. Lots of help, quick responses! I have used other forms in the past but by far very happy with you all R2R members!

Around two months ago I decided what the heck let’s start a saltwater aquarium! I first started salt water when I was 16 and then got another tank when I was around 19 and then finally around 23. I got a 75 gallon that was my largest tank in the past. I have three tanks up to that point. I ran into many issues but obviously I did my best to learn from them. In my 20s I would work around 50 to 60 hours a week and now in my 30s I have switch careers to have more “me time”. That being said I wanted to get back into the salt water hobby as it was very demanding but also extremely rewarding !

I ordered a 90 gallon right off the bat but after doing more research and already noticing I was getting into it way too fast I slow down , stepped back and really did more research . I figured I wanted a 120, I really wanted a 180 but I just did not have the space .

I had a few goals :
1. I wanted a energy-efficient tank.
2. I want a tank free of nuisance algae and pests
3. I want maintenance as easy as possible like water changes , ATO.

So, I did just that. I purchased a photon v2 LED lighting system that uses under 200 W . I purchased DC pumps , reef octopus v4 for return, my protein skimmer as energy-efficient pump , my powerheads I’m still on the fence about . But they will be energy-efficient :)

I purchased 160 pounds of dry wafrom natural oceans . Same stuff as Marco rock . It turned out to be fantastic rock . I cleaned it, cured it which you don’t have to but I wanted to get the bacteria growing so my tank cycle was a lot shorter . I also added Coralline algae by Purple Hex to get the rocks going and beneficial bacteria .I purchased Bayer pest advance to dip all my corals . And I will do my best to keep nuisance pests out of my tank. My tub that I had the rock and started leaking after about a month only a few days before I was putting it in your tank that was a hick up . Kinda silly lol

I painted the back black and I water proofed the bottom and sides inside the stand.

6B2024EB-F2D9-4F13-ABED-F347354D1097.jpeg

Now for the maintenance I most proud about . I ran an 1 1/4” PVC flex line to my basements to a 44 gallon brute trashcan I hooked to a RO system that is connected to the trash can with float valves . I installed a laundry water catch that’s plumbed my drain pipe just in case if there is a overflow my finished basement it’s not ruined . I have a large pump that I can pump freshly made salt water up to my tank super easy and wireless turn on with the power . Then hooked up a siphon system upstairs that runs downstairs in to the basement drain so I can siphon out 25 gallons of water into the drain within a few minutes . Then my freshly made salt water will be pumped back up to the tank within minutes . I Remember in the past doing water changes was extremely taxing this time is very very easy and will allow me to have a well rounded maintenance system . Also I dis not enjoy topping off the water and in the past I would get lazy about it and then my salt level would rise now I purchased a barrel tender 2 I have a RO line ran upstairs into an auto shut off system if it detects any leaks it’s will shut the RO line. then into the auto top off bucket that is connected to a cylinder that will turn on and off when empty or full . That way I don’t have RO creep happen. Then I have it connected to a Tunze that’s connected to my sump keeping fresh water always full in my tank ! No worries and happy reefing :)

I'm starting to hang my LED lights now. Do you keep your lights center over the tank? Little back of the tank? Im going to mount them 10" and I can lower if needed but I don't know how far out I need the lights. Cant seem to find info.

Just finished hanging my lights. I bought a projection screen mount off of amazon and I used rubber spacers from work to bring it off the wall a little! It was kinda simple to install just a lot of measurements lol

I just got a Jebao PP-8 and Reef Octopus V4!

I must say the Jebao was loud for a second then super quite! This is my third power head and im happy with it! The controller has one led out but ill get that fixed. Im now getting a PP-4 for the other side of tank.

The RO V4 is SUPER QUITE! I love the float switch option as well. Only thing I don't like is the 3/4 barb fitting, looks like they rigged it to work. Other then that it's a nice pump. Not as strong as a would think so keep that in mind.

So I have 0 ammonia 0 nitrite and like 5 days ago I have a lot of nitrates, now it’s almost at 0! So my protein skimmer did the work? It did pull out crap. I’m doing a water change soon but it seems as if I’m almost good to go? How did my nitrates drop so quick without my intention really?

Ha. Mineral blocks pull out ammonia and nitrites to my understanding. They also effect nitrates directly?

You added a nice home for those nitrate scavenging critters in that MarinePure. ;)

Nice :) to help me learn what scavenges on nitrates? I thought nitrates only come out with skimmer and water changes. Teach me wise one

You've created a HUGE home (thousands of square inches) by using the MarinePure for the nitrobacter organisms to multiply and consume nitrates from your water column. Your tank glass, sand, rock, sump, etc. all provide homes for the nitrobacter to live upon. But your MarinePure grows them like they are on steroids. HUGE numbers. Here's a link that explains it much better than me: https://www.thespruce.com/what-is-the-nitrogen-cycling-process-2924241

Cool beans :) ! I always thought it’s taken out by skimmer or water changes not by a bacteria! Good learn!

I’ll read that link, I watched a BRS test on the block. I’m a year or so there numbers went I, I wonder why. Over time does the block get clogged ? I wonder how long they last. You ever see that study?

Yes, I've seen the BRS study. Good info. Yes, it can get clogged. When you feel the need, dunk the block into a bucket of tank temperature fresh saltwater and give it a good shake. I've also used a very soft toothbrush to scrub off some algae that had formed on the surface. It took off the algae and a bit of the MarinePure at the same time. That stuff is very, very soft and crumbles easily. Be gentle.

Following. One suggestion though, move the water that is a horrible location for your water. I’m a AC tech and the moisture created by the water in front of the furnace is going to wreck havoc on it. Also it produces a lot of heat and fumes that I wouldn’t want near my aquarium water.

Thanks for the tip! What’s done is done tho :( what if I put a lid on it? Also it’s only full of water every 2 weeks for only 2 days. It’s only for water changes not for a fresh revisor.

A lid would definently help. It’s just the insides have raw metal in them and lots of moisture near them causes rust and premature failure. It not being full all the time definitely helps as well.
