I have a Red Sea 525 aquarium and want to add more flow. I am torn between adding either two AI Nero 7's near the top back glass on opposite sides vs two AI Orbit 4's near the top back glass on opposite sides. The reason I'm mixed on what to do is because the Nero 7 is a lot more compact, but I think going with the Orbit 4 has more advantages. What are your thoughts? Thank you

Neros are going to be able to go longer between cleanings and keep stronger punchier flow, but with a less spread. The orbits are going to give you a larger flow path, but with less punch and will need to be cleaned more often to keep the same flow.

Makes sense. I think the Orbits on the back glass will have enough power for the width of the tank. Might go with two Orbits for more spread and different direction options like you mentioned.

I’ve got Nero 7 and maxspect gyres on opposite sides on a peninsula tank. I love the Nero 7. It is paired with two MP60s and it has as much power and spread.

I like the gyres for the surface flow but that flow dwindles as the gyres collect debris and buildup. Would I trade the two gyres for two Nero7s if I knew the upkeep pain in the butts they are?…yes.

You're the second person to mention build up and lower performance. Definitely something to consider. I was concerned that the Nero 7 having a more narrow flow path would be an issue if it's positioned on the back of the tank.

Having had a nero 5 to compare to both jebao and redsea gyres ( i know, not AI, but gyre is gyre) I would say that if you don't do maintenance, the gyres diminish exponentially after about a week and and a half. I think in the 5 years i had the nero 5 i cleaned it maybe 10 times. They don't need cleaned nearly as much. I like the flow on a clean gyre, but i don't know if the trade off is worth it. Just my .02.

The flow is pretty wide on the 7. And with two in sync you could probably get a gyre going or even a nice rocking block of water.

The gyres are good for the gyre, near the surface laminer flow. Which is great. But the long paddle propellers are small and collect buildup quickly

I just put on orbit on my tank to go with a MP40. I love what the orbit brings to the tank a lot.
Keeping in mind I want to add two pumps on the top back glass, would you still mix the two or would you get two Orbits?
I love the mix on my tank from each side., but that’s specific to my needs and the corals I have. On the back glass I would personally go two of the same. If it were me I’d go two Neros on the back and two orbits on the sides.

I loved the orbits at first, then like @Red_Beard has mentioned they get dirty very quickly and constantly need cleaning. It was way too much maintenance for my liking and now they sit in a box in the garage. I should try to sell them or something.

I switched from those to 2 Tunze eco 6105’s and talk about some water movement. Yes they are a little larger. However they move some serious water. I had 1 Nero 7 and liked it but for me and my application it was too wide of flow and wouldn’t hit the other side of the tank. I run a peninsula tank so I had some real challenges with flow.

All great advice! Looks like I'll be getting a pair of Nero 7's. I know it's counter intuitive to put the pumps on the back glass, but I'm trying to get away with not having to put anything on the side glass for a cleaner look. I was thinking bottom left pointing upward right and top right pointing downward left (I know there's only so much I can angle them)

That’s a 5’ tank right?

If you’re wanting to run everything on the back glass, I’d consider four Nero 5’s better than two 7’s. It gives you infinitely more options on what you want your flow to do. It would cost you about $240 more with this option, but worth it in my opinion. I have all 3 on my tank (6’, 180gallon). Two Nero 5’s, two 7’s, and 2 Orbit 4’s.

All the Nero’s are on the back glass with the 7’s in the middle and 5’s towards the sides. The Orbits are on opposite ends on the sides. I can likely get away with just the Nero’s, but love what the Orbits add. They do have to be cleaned more but I just pull the props leaving the motors in the tank. It’s pretty quick, but it is something else to do.

The 7’s are very strong and will push water over the glass if you crank them. It’s only 24” back to front. I really prefer the 5’s on the back glass than the 7’s. Don’t get me wrong, the 7’s work great back there, but a bit over sized. Here’s a pic of my tank with pump placement from my build thread.

Good luck with the choice and one more thing. My 5’s are 100% silent, but I hear the 7’s. Not bad, but I hear them.

Thank you so much going through explaining all that. You really gave me a lot to think about. Four Nero 5's would make the most sense for the reasons you mentioned. I was thinking two Nero 7's only for the wider flow diameter (compared to the 5's). I agree, the 5's are plenty for 24". I was hoping for an easy, indisputable answer....but there's no right answer here.

Also, would you say that if the frequent cleaning wasn't an issue, it's better to go with the two Orbit 4's against the top back glass because I can point the props in different angles? It's like having 2 fans in 1?

Haha, you are right about that. But I’m pretty confident you’d be happier with 4 pumps vs 2. As your tank grows out, you usually have to be more strategic on where you place pumps to get flow all over the place. 4 pushers just gives you more places to do it from. Also, the directionality is pretty limited on these. Don’t expect too much. They are not like Tunze’s that are completely directional.

I’ve never put them back there because they push so much water, I thought it would be too much. I’ve seen a few people on here that put them back there just haven’t done it to comment.

I get it, four pumps would give me more flexibility and coverage.
I'm also considering the fact I can have the Orbits closer to the water surface, also the multi-direction capability, reverse mode, and I don't have to add another extension cord because I'm almost out of outlets lol
As you can tell I'm really trying to get away with using only two devices. If I go with the Orbit I was thinking of having one arm pointing straight and one arm pointing downward. If I go with two Nero's have them point towards the middle as much as possible. But I think I know what you'll say with two Nero's....dead spots.

I say go with your gut and get the two 7’s. You can always add in the future if needed. I always sweat this stuff so I get it. By the way I have all my PH’s on one outlet. The app still controls them individually.

I appreciate you and everyone else that chimed in. Don't hesitate to follow up on this if any other ideas come to mind. I don't want to make it more complicated than it needs to be, but you're right, I tend to overthink everything.
