I bought a new 125G recently that has two corner overflows. During the water test I noticed that water was flowing from the main portion of the tank into the overflow section, once there is more than an inch of water in the tank. I reached out to the manufacturer and they said it was a defect and refunded me my money. I would like to still use this tank so I removed the overflow walls. What are my options? I was going to re-silicone the overflows in place on the outside and inside. The inside was missing from the factory. I know that silicone does not bond well to cured silicone so if I go, this route, am I screwed and it will still leak? I want to be able to change the bulkhead without having to drain the entire tank.

Put a standpipe directly into the bulkhead and don't worry about the leak. The standpipe should be cut a 1/8th inch below the weir teeth, you lose an 1/8 inch of depth in the tank that flow into the sump when the pumps stop, but otherwise it will be fantastic.

I resealed the weirs back into place with ASI 509. Crossing my fingers that when I try filling it up next Sunday that there are no leaks. If there are I’ll just glue the stand pipes to the bulkhead to make sure the whole tank doesn’t drain. If I ever have a bulkhead fail, I’ll just have to drain the whole tank (if it doesn’t do it on its own)…

I have used slip fit PVC pipe into stand pipe situations with no issues in many tanks, without pipe glue. WOrks on threaded PVC also, just use teflon tape, three wraps on the threads. teflon Paste can also work, but is scares most people who don't want teflon paste in their tanks. 😇 No glue makes for easy disassembly years later, if it is needed.
