So, I now have at least one anemone of all the ones usually found in our hobby. Recently I picked up a magnifica from a local lfs, as for once the past few they have received looked ok, but not great, and so far the 5 of 5 sold are doing well (1-3 months in). None of the 5 have been through cipro either. Well last night I started mine on cipro. All my nems go through it, and knock on wood, have not lost one yet.

I took my 5.5g tank, put the nem it is with the water from the LFS, dripped my tank water for 4 hours into it, and then it began its first dose. It's mouth was a little puckered outwards, but not bad and it has not deflated since moving to the corner of the tank. So hoping for the best.

I just wanted to pop this in here as this is the first magnifica I have had since I moved 5 years ago. Figured would be a nice little log to refer back to and look at pics.

Here is the nem after it settling in and planting it's foot to the glass. So we shall call this Day 0.

Nice looking specimen!!! Someday.......I will have one. :)
I have wanted one since moving and setting everything back up lol. But I feel those guys need a tank at least 2-3 years old and stable. Haddonis, sebea, bubbles and ltas I have found more forgiving. Mini maxis and rock flowers can live anywhere in anything lol. So I saw a nice looking one and snagged it. Gonna have to move some things around and pray it stays where I put it, but to me it is worth it.

Well it took a poo and that is great. One thing I have learned over the years is a nice big poo from a nem in treatment is a good sign. Get all that nasty out from all that shipping. Now to do a water change and give the critter some more cipro. The mouth is also now nice and tight. It has also attached every part of its foot to the glass.

Well this is a first. Did the 90% or so water change and used a turkey blaster to get the poo in the water column for syphoning, it did not deflate even a bit. With new water in, it puffed up a little more. Mainly where the poo was sitting.

Looking good. That’s going to be a nice one once it colors up. What color is the foot?
It has a pinkish/purplish white foot. Hard to describe lol. Lights are off and was hoping to snag a pic for ya, but it is still all spread out and loving the flow from the little powerhead.

Well the bugger is still doing good. Just had another water change and more cipro. It took another poo and looks a ton better after this one, even though it only did it about 15 minutes ago. Was a little worried as it looked like it was struggling. Hard to explain, but mouth open more than it should be and it’s foot was pushing inwards making the mouth area protrude more. If you have Magnifica or haddonis you know what I am talking about lol. Well the reason why was it had a piece of coralline covered shell the size of a quarter it was trying to expel. It did manage to expel it, but I have never seen one poo something like this. Had a Haddoni expel some hermit shells, a sebea expel a lead sinker, and a true carpet expel a piece of hard plastic. All small items.

At least it is out and the nem is still doing well. Shortly after doing its business, the mouth closed up nice and tight and its foot went back to being used as it should be lol.

The chunk of shell compared to a quarter. It looks like a layer of a shell, so hopefully the rest of the shell has passed or will pass soon.

And the bugger still not at 100% after it’s stuggle with calcium induced constipation lol.

Day 2 after water change and a rough poo.

Thanks! Thinking of a mag. Keep us posted on how it does. What kind of lighting do you have for it?

For qt, a modded 165w blackbox light set at about 350 par peak on it at about 8-12k (varies with the settings and is that high only for an hour now). Light is only running 5 hours a day and Cipro is dosed about 30 minutes before lights out and then the room is dark after that. Note: the light was setup around 150 par peak on day 0 and within a few hours the nem was at the top of the tank wanting more lol. I have ramped it up over the past few days though. I think it still wants more as it is inching up to the the side glass again. The last one I had was in almost 550 par and was at the top of the waterline. These guys love light, at least from what I noticed of the ones I had in the past.

The tank it will be going in is lit by XR30s. Also at about 8-12k. In the past, also my present nems, all seem to prefer more of a warmer light. I also prefer it, as heavy blues are only for my zoa/softie tanks lol, since it really makes them pop. Once you dive real reefs and see nems up close in real sunlight, it is hard not to try and match that. I think that light range is when their real beauty comes out. But to each their own lol.

Well the nem is still doing good and seems to poo at 5pm everyday lol. This poo looked like the normal ball of gunk and that makes me happy, as bad as that sounds lol. I did manage to snag a pic of the mouth, but it does not do justice for it. I had to move some tentacles and well, after all of its expelling, I think it is hungry. It elicited a nice feeding response and attempted to move my finger to its mouth and open its mouth a little lol. The feeding response is the best thing so far, so hopefully all stays well.

Day 3 - mouth shot with about 3” water left in tank, and with it blowing a kiss lol.

Here is the Day 4 update.

Mouth nice and tight, tried to eat my finger again when I moved some tentacles to see the mouth, foot firmly secured to glass, par up to about 400 and half of the leds are covered up to give it a lower par area on the other half of the tank. Par will hold there for a bit and I will see how it reacts. Top of the rocks in the tank it will be going in is at about 450-500 depending on the ripples and such from the gyres.

Nice nem chief, quick question, what is you dosage for the 5.5?
Normally 125mg, but with Magnificas, I have found 250mg to work better. They always seem to have more in them (poo) when they arrive and I can only imagine how long it has sat and festered inside of them. Also, this is the first one I have treated for me to keep, since I moved 5 years ago, so I am not taking any chances lol. Nothing against the nems I treated for friends, but this one is mine lol.

Day 5 update at the beginning of day 6 lol. Water was changed and cipro dosed on time though. So the nem is getting the love it needs lol.

Mouth still tight, still all nice and puffy, but no poo today. That is ok though. It may actually have expelled all the nastiness from its tansport to the states and then to the lfs. The amount would equate to what it looks like it could hold lol.

Day 5 pic: still looking good

No pics for day 6, as it was hectic this weekend. I did get the water changed and the cipro dosed again. Nem is looking awesome and after work today will be moved to it's forever tank a few days early. I normally run a minimum of 7 days, but this guy is hungry and takes up the entire 5.5 I have it in now. With the immediate feeding response when I dropped a small Mysis on it, I am comfortable with getting it in a real tank. Luckily it will be going into a healthy system that has been up for 3 years. Excluding where I connected additinal jbj 45 to the sump.

looking good. Good luck.
Thanks.

Well it is in the tank. I decided to put it in the JBJ 45 that is now drilled and tied into a system of about 190 gallons. This will allow it to move if it wants to, but not roll over anything except a small bubble nem. I doubt it will get that close to the bubble, since the bubble is in an odd spot. The a. bicinctus in there have already introduced themselves, had to run off a few times as the nem showed a feeding response when they tried to see if it would host them, but now they are settled in and have fed the nem its first meal in captivity. A couple of pieces of mysis lol.

I will try to get a better pic later on, as this one is horrible and blown out in blue. Note to self: Use personal phone and not the iPhone 6 from work when taking pics lol.
