The great thing about the lighting is you can really dial it down to acclimate the corals and Anemone.
On a 55 gallon I would probably start at 18 inches and adjust for spread.
My fixture is 6 yrs old and still going strong. The Viparspectra doesn't have all the bells and whistles but it grows corals no problem. I have the hanging kit.

Do you only have one light above yours?

Yes. The biggest tank I used it on was an IM 40 gallon.

After looking at your tank thread I would suggest two fixtures.

I do plan on doing two fixtures, but since we were coming from such a poor light, I figured I would purchase one acclimate and then add in the second one, especially since I also have to work on a very tight budget

Understand.

Great light for the price. Just acclimate slow and hang it a little lower until you get another fixture.
On my IM 14 it's only 8 inchs above the water line and turned way down.
