Hi all, I'm new to the saltwater game and could do with some help of you if you don't mind assisting me.
I've kept cichlids for years and have finally decided to go marine, I currently have a 1000 liter tank tank would look amazing with a reef inside I have a very basic knowledge of the hobby when it comes to marine. I'd like some help and advice on my sump and how to set it up what and where to put things I've posted some pictures of my sump that is being used for my cichlids at the moment, can anyone tell me how to set this up for a marine setup?

Since you have fish you understand some basics. If you are breeding fish even better. It takes time to develop a salt water system. A little more than just gravel, water and dechlorinator drops.

Thanks for all your replys, I've had a read through the supreme guide, im not looking forward the algae blooms as my wife is going to hate it. I was going to cure my live rock in a separate tank while I'm waiting to set up my main display any chance that would help avoid some of the algae growth in my main tank if the rock is already cycled ?

I want to keep corals and fish nothing too fancy to start with just some nice pieces I'd like to start small and watch them grow, my wife has only agreed to me doing this if she can have clown fish so that's a must have, I'd like a blue tuxedo erchin but haven't really got anything else in mind as of yet just trying to get as much knowledge about the set up first before I start

Curing the rock first should definitely help. Sounds like you have a good approach. Take it slow, ask any questions you have and you will be great =)

I'm in no rush as such as much as I'd love it to happen overnight I'm well aware this isn't the case my wife on the other hand has no understanding and just wants everything now she does understand she has to wait though, I'm going to start curing the rock I have this weekend it can't hurt to have it sat curing for a few months can it ? When the cycle is done should I put any live stock clean up crew in the tank with the rock or just leave it with just rock?

As long as there is algae going a CuC can be added. Just need to make sure water parameters and food are taken care of.

That's good to know thanks, any ideas on my sump I think it's a bit of an odd design as it has filter socks in the 3rd section I fort the socks are normally the first part of the filtration ? I'm pretty new to sumps as well as marine I've normally only used canister filters but knowing I was going to go marine I brought a tank that had a sump already with it

This is a really good plan. I would put them in a rubbermaid/old tank/trash can etc with a heater and power head for circulation. I would add a bottle of starter bacteria (dr Tim's, biospira, fritz etc) and let those babies simmer for a few months. I'd throw some flakes or dose ammonia in there from time time as well. Another thing u could do would be to add a small piece of live rock from a lfs to help seed the new rock with a diverse set of bacteria. All this will make things much easier when you set up your display tank. Good luck and def keep us posted with your progress =)
