Hi everyone, I'm going to be setting up my first Nano 10g aquarium. This is also going to be my first Saltwater aquarium...

Can someone point me through the basics? I'm not wanting to run a skimmer but would like to know what type of filtration I should use besides live rock/sand.

Lighting? This is just going to be your average 10g petsmart aquarium, so maybe thinking a current something? Wanting to grow very basic corals/anemones

I've heard of the Nuvo 10 but the light is separate and it $220 total for light and tank but very convenient. My girlfriend is wanting to buy the tank set up for me for Christmas so I don't want to make her pay for more than she has to but if that's as cheep as its gonna get its not ruled out yet. Beautiful tank.

Thank you for all the input you guys share. I tend to get lost in other threads so I would prefer most info goes here but not stopping anyone! :)

Welcome to R2R! Try to message one of the mods to move your thread to the New to Hobby subforum.

You can skip a skimmer for a small tank like that. Water changes is all you need for that. Are you sold on a 10 gal? You will outgrow that in no time. Also, such a small tank really won't allow for an anemone.

The Nuvo series is nice. I was looking into setting one up at one point. Look at the Aquaillumination Prime for a small tank like that. Or the new Kessil is a cheaper option, but it's not controllable out of the box (controller separate but you can control the color/intensity manually).

Keep reading and researching is my best advice.

The nuvo 10 is very nice and i have seem it maintained with a filter sock and water changes nothing extra really needed apart from the live rock and sand in the display portion... I have seem people put small anemones in them it can be done (totally up to you) i would probably want a little bigger tank for one. What is attractive about the nuvo is its an all in one tank so no need to buy extra stuff except maybe a heater and a light and if you get a nice light like the kessil or prime you can use them when you upgrade say to a 20 gallon or so....

I'm not necessarily sold on a 10 gal as much. I'm mainly just seeing what my options are as far as price. The Nuvo is convenient and all in one, yet I could also go the piece by piece rout and get live rock, 20 gal, and a Orbit Light from Current or something like that, I would love to get a Kessil but price is also a factor... :(

So would you guys say for a 20g being the same procedure:
- Skimmer Optional
- Filter Optional
- Lots of live rock/sand
- And a decent light?

Thank you guys again, great responses! :):)

unfortunately with a generic 20 gallon or 10 gallon you would almost certainly need a hang on back filter or you can try plumbing it lol, but i also know they sell these mod kits that'll turn a generic tank into an all in one tank not sure how much that is or where but ill check and get back to you

I'm pretty decent with DIY so possibly could build an internal filter like the Nuvo 10 but for a generic 20g and just silicone it in place. Might take up space but could work lol

Welcome to the reef world and to R2R. I'll give you some advice. I'll also tell you the bad news. I would not go with a 10 gallon. To be honest for a first timer and first tank I wouldn't go with anything smaller then a 55. There are many reasons for that. But if I had to give one of the many is that your water parameters will change faster, much faster then when you have more water volume. You'll also be limited to what you can have in your tank. A little more bad news. This hobby is crazy expensive. So I'll give you some good news. Look at the Fluval evo. It's pretty much the whole set up you need. All you'll need it some rock and sand. Look into that. That might be the alternative for the 10 gallon and not going with the 55 or up. Good luck and I wish you well in the hobby. Any other questions or ideas ask away. My self and a lot of people on here know a lot about this hobby we love so much but want to bang our heads against a wall.
