My first tank was from a friend as well! A little 10 gallon. I still use it as a sump haha.

Only tip from me is try to develop a good maintenance routine. I take a day a week to do water changes and testing. As well as any other things that need attention. It really helps with stability and will lead you to seccess.

Just get to know the basics of maintenance and caring for this gift, ask your friend what schedule he had with setup, feeding, cleaning, testing, etc and do your own research also, eventually you will be asking what fish or invertebrate to add
