New!!

Welcome!
For me it was the white rock. It just takes longer to go through the curing cycle then true live rock.
So dry rock will go through a phase of apparent ugliness? Last time I was in the hobby I just bought straight live rock.

Yes. I have used live rock a number of times before and there is much die off which raises initial bacteria levels immensely and ammonia levels to be high. This is what causes a true cycling process.
With the white rock there is no die off. You use additives but it is not the same so the bacteria build up is much slower so the cycle is much slower. It’s not like it didn’t cycle but that there are not enough beneficial bacteria present.
So It took much longer for my tank to completely cycle and mature.
I also researched this issue here as well on R2R and basically this was what I had discovered.

i bought mostly dry rock so far and one piece of live rock. I buy more rock as I go, various things get in the way before I have been able to buy more rock yet though.
