No it's not weird. IME it is a myth that every tank goes through various ugly stages. You don't have much bioload, etc - which may be another reason.

I suspect the system is nutrient depleted, just not enough food for the micro biome to grow quickly and sustain a large, visible population of uglies. Also, strong illumination plays an important role. A third factor that might influence what grows in an aquarium is how heavily it is inoculated.

Not surprising at all. I'm gonna do a long cycling technique, wait on fish x2 months, wait on lighting x2.5 months and make sure all surfaces are coated with bacteria before starting it up. It's an experiment so we'll see. I'm aiming for no ugly phase.

If what you're saying is true - we've cured the uglies - i.e. less food (which is and has been for decades obvious)
