Im currently working on replacing the impeller on my Fluval 207 canister filter, it kept making clicking noises so I decided to order a new impeller. ( I know canister filters aren't recommended but its been working great for me so far, and I clean it every two weeks religiously. (running fiter floss and media in the filter) ANYWAYS, the new impeller will arrive in two days from now, will my tank be okay? Should I add some filter floss to the back compartment of my AIO meanwhile? Any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

If you also run a canister filter on your tank, let me know!

Fyi Canister filter is about a year old, I know its still under warranty - I emailed fluval but got a little impatient and just pulled the trigger on a new impeller

Will my beneficial bacteria die off? I have it my canister plugged in at the moment but it keeps clicking randomly and it’s annoying :p should I place my media inside my tank meanwhile???

Your bacteria won't die in a few days to a week or more; just keep them "wet".

Personally, I don't care for canister filters, but I 100% agree that many run marine tanks using them without problems.

I'd do whatever you can to keep flow going in terms of the tank, especially anything to break up the surface tension, and cause surface agitation, which I believe would promote good gas exchange.

Good luck!

Excellent advice here. If you're super concerned, add an airstone.

As long as there is flow in the tank, you are fine. Take the media out of the canister while you wait and chuck it in the aio chamber if it fits or whereever if it doesnt, so it doesnt go anoxic. Will be fine with or without floss.

Yes, I would use filter floss while waiting for your impeller.

ETA : how did you damage your impeller in only 1 year ? Those things last forever and Fluval canisters are well made…
To be honest with you… I’m not sure… I cleaned it a week ago and it was working perfectly fine, took it apart today to change some filter floss and it started acting up… I’ve been reading other forums and this one post said a new impelled fixed the issue… impeller wasn’t too expensive so I just decided to go ahead and change it: I will update one it gets here… im really hoping it fixes the issue

Okay…. Sooo…. It’s working now…. 😁 I took it apart again and I realized that I had to pushed in the gasket that holds the impeller in fully…. Been running for 5 minutes now and no noise !!

Scratch that… noise is still here… impeller and gaskets coming in tomorrow lol
If there is no crack on the impeller, then it’s fine. Gasket might be too loose or worn out but then again, these things usually last very long.

Do you oil your gasket after you clean it ? If not start doing it to protect it. You can use a bit of cooking oil on a paper towel and rub it on to lubricate it.

The impeller isn’t cracked now that I’m looking at it, but there is a small dent/ scratch on the outer part of the gasket that holds the impeller shaft in place, it’s a small dent but I’m guessing that it’s big enough to be letting air in? That’s my hope at least… I really hope this kit fixes my issue - whenever I run the filter that gasket always tends to move up and I always have to press it down, whenever I open it back up… if that makes sense…

Ok then, that’s not the gasket. The gasket is the black o-ring. That’s the cover. Yes, if there is a dent or a crack, it could be your issue. Is it still under warranty ? I don’t see how normal usage could damage that part.

Yeah it’s still under warranty, I’m going to try replacing everything that comes in the kit, if it doesn’t fix the issue- I’ll go through the warranty process… hope it’s a quick process dealing with Fluval

Quick question…. do you know if that black gasket is supposed to be installed inbetween the impeller shaft and impeller shaft holder? I was watching several videos and never saw anybody pull out that black gasket? I’ve been running it for almost a year now issues until now.. did I possibly uninstall it wrong from the beginning?

Also included a picture of the dent/scratch… no clue how that how there… I always clean this thing with soft brushes

Check this. It’s been years so I don’t quite remember.

FIXED IT! 100000000% sure now!! I feel like a complete idiot.. I never read the instructions when I set this up, and I always wondered why Fluval decided to put this grey piece on the bottom of the canister…. TURNS OUT - ITS THE F*cking lid for the media basket!!! Hence why the impeller holder kept slipping out…. I’m not sure how I never had issues until now but if anybody ever runs into this issue… here you go lol

You made my day!!! thank you again 😁

run a sponge filter or two to tie you over. I would also consider a different means of filtration. The canister unit is a mechanical filter and you want to have mechanical , biological and chemical to manage proper water quality. The canister will polish water and trap particles via the media within housing.
Chemical is what traps and breaks down chemical compounds such as feces and uneaten food often accomplished with use of carbon and GFO as examples
Biological is what utilizes the natural process of biological filtration such as use of ceramic nuggets, bio blocks, and microscopic bacteria surfaces as examples. Best it to add or use a hang on refugium such as Reef octopus or AquaMaxx unit and even add a hang on skimmer such as ice cap K1- or K2 100

Got it, so right now I have tons ceramic nuggets, filter floss, and a bag of chemipure elite inside of my canister. I occasionally will add some sponges to the canister filter but, im running out of space in there lol ( maybe I could add some sponges to my AIO compartment?) and I do think I have some bio blocks sitting around I could look into adding those as well.

I’m also running a small protein skimmer, the bubble magnus mini Q and I am currently saving up for a refugium/ algae scrubber ^^^^
