No more loudwolf sodium nitrate?

Okay so I need to go ahead and continue dosing my tank for nitrates and phosphates and I was going to buy from loudwolf. But it seems that they don’t carry sodium nitrate anymore does anyone know why?

If not any other solutions I can make up?

I’ll have to keep looking as I wanted to get trisodium phosphate as well and shipping was free from loudwolf but $15 from the one you linked.

Is potassium nitrate a bad idea to dose nitrates with?

I used to use it, then switched to sodium because I was worried about raising the potassium level too high without having a test kit for it.

I'd recommend Amazon then, they have free shipping and low prices.

No, I don't know if these are reef safe.

It's 80% Na3(PO4)3 and 20% Na2CO3. If you're only dosing in ppb (ug/L) levels, then it's probably okay.

The sodium nitrate looks quite pure and has the same purity listed as analytical grade material from Sigma-Aldrich (see: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/catalo...?symbol=608742&LotNo=OI2454&brandTest=ALDRICH)

Reefers are starting to drain the supplies of uncommon chemicals. Sodium nitrate has been limited in the past due to potential to make explosives.

I would get food or reagent grade sodium nitrate. There are other sellers that have it, such as amazon. Potassium nitrate food grade is OK, but especially if you do not do water changes, I'd be careful.

Reefers are starting to drain the supplies of uncommon chemicals. Sodium nitrate has been limited in the past due to potential to make explosives.

I think the sodium nitrate from Walmart is quite pure and very inexpensive. The certificate of analysis sheets you found suggest sodium nitrate is highly pure (99.6-99.9%) with only traces of water, chloride, sulfate and nitrite (if you are dosing at ppm, then you're introducing negligible impurities and the aforementioned impurities are innocuous). For comparison, loudwolf claims sodium nitrite is 99.6% pure, but there is no certificate of analysis provided to support this claim (since sodium nitrate is no longer sold, I can't find any information on Loudwolf's website).

I can't find a certification of analysis for trisodium phosphate, so would not recommend it.

It does not indicate a problem, but it also does not carry the assurance that food grade does.

Suppose that could be an issue if your not doing water changes. With normal weekly/biweely water changes, that shouldn't be an issue?

Food grade potassium nitrate is OK to use, but as we have noted, the concern is the potential to raise potassium over time, especially in a tank with little or no water changes. The boost to potassium is about 2/3 the size of the nitrate boost. So if you add 3 ppm nitrate per day, you are adding 2 ppm potassium per day. That's OK for a while, but eventually potassium may rise too much.

I personally use neonitro, but was just thinking out loud on what could be used as a proper alternative, and knew saltpeter(from being a chef) is mainly potassium nitrate.
