So this is a bit odd and I’m not really sure if it means anything but I figured I’d ask and see if anyone has any input.

I have a rainbow basslet going through qt right now. I put all my new fish through a hybrid tank transfer. This guy has been doing great the whole time nothing of concern, up untill tonight. and eating every day.

Just last night I gave him the final h2o2 bath and final tank transfer. I’m sitting here now a day later listening to him jump out of the water every ~10 mins.

Could this be a sign of something in particular?

Just in case anyone asks, yes there is an air stone with plenty of oxygenation. Ik my salts fine I’ve tested this batch already and I triple checked my temp at 77 and sg at 1.025. I haven’t checked ammonia but it’s a single fish in 5 gallons since yesterday.

Basslets can be jumpers but keep light intensity low during the day and observe for any itching or scratching during the day

Liopropoma basslets do not enjoy TTM, I'd never use it on one. They really need to feel more secure during quarantine.

The behavior you noticed is called "piping". It stems from the fish being stressed, and it uses a lot of energy and can cause physical damage. Trouble is, I can't tell you how to abate it, because typically, it gets better when the lights are out (like putting blinders on a horse).

Thanks for the reply. He never showed any signs of disease or parasites since day one so I decided to just pull him and put him in an observation tank. He immediately darted into a rock cave that I can’t see into.

Hopefully he establishes

Hid all day but came right out at feeding time and has been out ever since. Such a cool looking fish.

Nice fish. About 25 years ago, there was a diver who would collect in deep water off Palm Beach Florida. He would supply me with this species, spotfin hogfish tattler bass and bank butterflyfish. I always felt a bit bad - he would dive solo for these at depth, which I always felt was risky.

Wow, I didn’t know these were in that area. But depths of “75-750ft” I can only imagine there not an easy fish to come by. Plus the difficulty of bringing fish up from depth.
