Had a velvet outbreak i believe was caused by a fish ordered from a well known coral vendor that seems to be dropshipping fish from a wholesaler. I didn't qt it. I regret it. I lost a chocolate tang, tenneti tang, and a royal tang. Removed and qt'd all fish except a melanarus wrasse. I can't catch him. Tried sectioning off the tank, watching where he sleeps, nyos trap. He's very aware that I'm trying to catch him. He's more patient than me. He has never shown signs of velvet. The other fish have been treated and have been doing well in a holding tank for 8 weeks. I've read too much. Forgot where I read some of it. I read about a study showing wrasses had an immunity to velvet somewhere and can't find it again. It was r2r or humblefish. I know it's not fallow if he's in the tank. I tried to test the tank by acclimating black mollies. None made it to the morning in saltwater. I think they were too small, or from petco and petsmart. I don't want to kill more. Would the @dxaquaria HealthScan qPCR Test show if velvet is still in the tank? Would it tell me if I could add the others back to the dt, or do I just need to bite the bullet and tear up the tank to catch him?

Wrasse aren’t really resistant to velvet, but I do hear reports from people where a wrasse survived or was the last to die.

The Aquabiomics eDNA test would help show the DNA presence of parasites, but their turnaround time can be over a month.

I haven’t tried the PCR test, but did I read where it only works in cases of “moderate infection”?

The Healthscan qPCR Test claims to detect low levels with a turnaround time of 48 to 72 hours. It isn't the test strips. It's a a filter material that you put in the tank and send off for testing. I think I'm going to try it because I can't catch the crafty little *******. He hasn't shown a single sign of velvet and he's the only thing in the tank that velvet can survive on for the past 8 weeks. He's gotten fat and I'm tired of seeing just him in the reef.

I'm assuming your tank is too large to drain it down to 3" of water (low tide method), catch the Wrasse, and fill the tank right back up?

Yea. 150 gallons. I mean, I could, but... Definitely don't want to.

I ordered the test. We"ll see what the results are and go from there. I would really hate to have to pull all of the rock and drain it way down.

150 gallons is easy enough to drain and catch him, I get not wanting to do it
I’m in a similar boat atm but it really only takes a couple hours and being prepared with a few brutes, tubs, stacks of towels and a pump for returning water to tank
Just do it

Let us know how the test turns out. While they do advertise a quick turnaround - mailing the test to you and then you mailing it back is going to add some time to the process.

Ordered on Thursday, got it on Tuesday. Being mailing back out on Wednesday. The test consisted of a 10 ml water sample and 30 ml being dripped through some filter material 3 times.

Reporting my results. Ordered1/15. Received on 1/20. Shipped sample on 1/21. I received the results on 1/28 even with winter storm Fern going on. The report shows no Ich, Velvet, Lymphocystis, or Uronema. I will add my fish back to the dt this weekend and hopefully the Velvet will not show up dispite the melanurus wrasse not being removed.
