Lots of changes!!! Completely redid the aquascape and I’ve gone absolutely stick crazy!!! I can’t seem to stop buying corals?! I’m almsot fully stocked! Let the grow out begin!
I have the disease called "stickaholics" but luckily my LFS is more than happy to give a frag or two, anytime. LFS pictured below
LOL. Can't get enough of sticks out here. I can spend hours snorkeling searching for one, most of the time under 3 feet of water during low tides. Those islands (pictured 4 out of 8 around here) are class 1 protected marine parks, there might be a jaw breaker sticks out there somewhere
Looking super sharp! You're taking these out of the ocean and they are doing well in your tank? Are you just clipping a little piece off and putting them in your tank? Are you quarantining them? Really curious how it's all working out. Time for me to move somewhere tropical! I've got the Oregon coast, but those things aren't easy to keep and the cost to keep a tank cool is outrageous.
Yup, I just break the sticks (an inch or two) that I like, drive home (after finishing my shopping for sure), rinse it off with my tank water and straight into display. I will use super strong turkey buster to clean the wild frags. So far no issue. My 75G display...
I toyed with the idea of going with a cold tank and farming the Oregon coast - the anemones out here are pretty incredible. Some softies that are really nice, too.
I only got into reefing 3 months ago because I was interested in fish. THAT led quickly to SPS for me. My LFS guy laughed when I went in last week being excited and asking about SPS. He said I took a big jump, right to the good stuff. I'm trying my hand at a selection of Monti he thought would be good starters, and I'm already researching what comes next! Truly amazing creatures, as are all corals.
I'm not the "tang" police, so with that said....... clown tang? They get over 1 foot in size!!!!!! and get very aggressive as they age. Nice tank.
Believe it or not, at the public beach pictured above, a beautiful reef is just about 100 meter from the exposed sand beach. Decent sized maxima clams, plate corals, various snails, favias, gonioporas, tounge corals and other beautiful LPS corals are very common. Stags, tabling sticks, montiporas, poccis and I think at least another 5 to 10 different SPS are in these area alone. I am afraid going deeper than my nose (during low tide) due to giant grouper nest somewhere in this area (you know when they are around - out of sudden murky water )
I haven't a clue where you live, but it sounds pretty amazing. Groupers terrify me slightly more than barracuda and slightly less than sharks. I just looked up your location. You're in a beautiful spot!
Yup. I am living in a place called "Coral Triangle" where more than 75% of KNOWN corals are found . 83 species of staghorns are found here, for stags lovers this is heaven . A little bit of my state here http://says.com/my/lifestyle/why-sabah-is-the-jewel-of-southeast-asia
Thank you?! Don’t worry even if you were the tang police! Mine are very docile right now knock on wood! My purple tang isn’t even aggressive! They actually love each other! Not that I’m not saying they won’t get way more aggressive, which they will but right now they are good! I keep everyone well fed and that stems the agreesion tremendously. The most agreesivd fish I have is my adult purple and yellow wrasse. And for size wise that why they make bigger tanks ! Also they were all introduced at the same time they are a school now lololol. I would think of adding another tang... as it would be an absolute blood bath worthy of its own movie!
That looks an awful lot like paradise! My wife and I plan to retire to Belize. Sooner rather than later.
I visited Sabah and loved it there. The peopare are very friendly. Diving was fantastic in Sipadan. It was the most amazing dive sites I have ever been too. Reefs around Kota Kinabalu are not so great though.
Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai are great diving sites. Yes, reef around state capital is recovering from fish bombing activities in the 80's to 90's. Other than that, they are exposed to river runoff (soil and sludge) when it rains. Human waste is another issue as the city population exploded too. Marine parks (3 areas, million hectares) has been gazetted, hopefully in 10 to 20 years time it will return to it's pristine conditions. Another problem is too many tourists visiting Kota Kinabalu reef parks (too close to town centre ), snorkeling, picnic, scuba, water activities with tons of sun screen creams are stressing the system to an extent
TANK UPDATE!!! LOTS OF CHANGES! So one night I decided to completely clean out my system and I mean clean out everything. I completely rearrange my live rock sucked out half of my sand queen absolutely every crevice of my aquarium. I also bought a bunch of new corals! I also added my castle back onto this aquarium supplemented by the T5 high output. So one night I decided to completely clean out my system and I mean clean out everything. I also added my castle back onto this aquarium supplemented by the T5 high output I upped my dose saying and all corals are doing much much better great growth on everything. Changed the flow again, as it’s proving to be difficult to find the perfect one! I think I have it now! Here’s a few pics and things over the last month with addition of two new clown fish and a maximum clam! All my inhabitants are doing great and now we’re just at the point where I’m waiting for grow out! all my inhabitants are doing great and now we’re just at the point where I’m waiting for a girl out or I will need a bigger tank!
