i have no problem with it. we are paying out the rear for oil when we have some of the largest reserves in the world right under our feet. i'm all saving the planet and doing whats right for enviroment but not at the expense of human life thats for sure. this can be done with little impact and i'm not concerned

I dont think it will be a problem. Look at all the habitat it creates when the pilings go in. Besides they are very clean drilling practices nowadays. i dont see why the environmentalists get so worked up. when is the last time you heard of a Oil rig making a problem for wildlife?

I'm 1/2 and 1/2 on this.

I'm happy were trying to get away from those oil mongers in the desert but just skeptical about potential impact to life around those waters plus if anything goes wrong via spill etc.

We lost a few Rigs in katrina and there was no spills. They all have redundant failsafes just for that reason. even when the pipes break and the Entire rig goes down, there is very little oil that actually goes into the water.

About freakin' time!!!! Not worried for a second about any oil spillage, times, technology, and science are way to advanced for that. Besides if there is, like the Xexon Valdes (sp?) there's always Dawn dish soap!

Too bad the world hit peak Oil production back in the mid 70's. We are just on the downhill slide now. Time to find some serious alternative energy, FAST!!!

there is Nuclear, Wind, Solar, Veggie fuels... so on and so forth... there is no need for fossil fules anymore anyway.


On a side note... my boss just made me lol. He said we could just hook a bunch of donkeys to a wheel and spin it!!

As a guy with a geology degree this makes me very happy! Maybe I can find a real job.
But like fossil fuels or not, the truth is us humans are going to use every last drop of fuel on earth, whether it be us, china or whoever. so it might as well be us that get the financial and industrial benfit of it, especially since we actually burn it pretty clean compared to other countries.

I work both the pertochemical and the wind industry. I believe in green energy however wind for example is supplying only 3% of the country's energy supply. Unless we make more nuclear plants we need this oil.

I'm all for the drilling. At the same time I think we should be at least starting to try to wean ourselves off of it. I live in Southern Cali and everytime i am stuck in traffic on the freeway which is more often then I would like, I look around and so many people are driving big gas guzzling suv's and there is no one in the car with them. People drive these as commuter's everyday. I'm sure that this really doesen't make that big of a difference but this country deffinately is hooked on oil and needs to start looking for alternative energy sources. How bout Tidal energy?

Oil is sold on the open market as a commodity. It is a myth that we will get this oil or that it will somehow make us independent of foreign oil. It is merely a cash grab for big oil. It won't save American citizens a dime.

I am of two minds on this. First, I really think looking out into the water and seeing a bunch of rigs is really ugly. That's what it is like in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas.

Also, if you look at the oil reserves in various places, the entire coast of Florida is estimated at 7 trillion barrels. Quatar, on the contrary, is estimated at like 300 trillion barrels. (I am quoting from memory, my numbers may not be right, but the magnitude of the difference is about right). Plus, to get to Florida reserves requires off-shore drilling, much more expensive than Quatar which is land-based, and also not very hard to get.

So, to summarize - drilling domestically is much more difficult, much more expensive, and very ugly. Plus the magnitude of what we can recover is dwarfed by supplies in other parts of the world.

That being said, it would be nice to get away from importing of oil. Also, would be nice to get away from importing a lot of other things. Our trade deficit is ridiculous, we no longer make anything in this country. Oil is just one of many things that we need to start producing (again) ourselves.

There were spills during Katrina beacuse they company i used to work for was hired to help (they merely rented our boat). But I agree that the pilings act as reefs for fish, corals, etc. and drilling is much safer than it used to be...they do it all over in the gulf

If you look at history you will see the pursuit of energy has great influence on the survival or demise of empires. The Danish were heavily invested in whale oil. They pursued whales near their shores until they had killed most of them. Then they went further and further. All the while the cost of the hunt kept rising. While they were chasing whales Brittain began the coal movement. They did the same. They mined until their own mines were drying up. They dug deeper and deeper until they finally had to look elsewhere to keep up with their demand. It grew more and more expensive to get coal until finally the US began the next big cycle. Oil. We are repeating history. It gets more and more expensive to acquire less and less oil. If we don't get serious about alternative sources of energy to satisfy our thirst we will become just another dinosaur. Countries that do get serious about alternatives will rise to the top.
