Could some fish disease possibly infect corals as well?

You can bring parasites into the tank with coral (on the stony parts). If you keep them in a fishless tank for 72 days it will be free of ick and (I think) velvet.

I've seen both quoted. I'd love to hear the justification for 76 days.
In a nutshell, iirc, 72 days is longest ich has been documented to encyst, the extra days are to make sure anything that hatched at 72 days has died without a host before end of quarantine.
@Humblefish can correct me if I'm remembering incorrectly..

And another vote to quarantine here

QT everything,....before adding them to your DT. Fish, corals, rock etc......everything.
Today, most stores do not,.... QT their fish nor add copper or other products to kill parasites or disease's, so we must !
Even if your store does, still QT.

You'll save a lot of grief, heartache, work, time and money if you do, for at least 4 weeks if not 6 to even 8. If you see any problems during that point and have to add medications, add another 4 to 6 weeks.
Resist the feeling of saying, "ah, but he's bored in this QT with no rock or sand...., and he looks healthy".

Don't do it. You can make the QT pretty nice looking by using non-porus decorations. Although I hate the look of PVC pipes & fittings, they work well for fish to hide in.

One choice you have before getting your first fish is to put the coral in your DT and then wait 76 days before you add your first fish. This doesn't work once you add fish so you might want to add a couple of coral and any inverts you are planning on stocking.

The other choice is a QT tank for fish and one for coral. I recommend reading about tank transfer method (TTM) for fighting ick as well.

Setting up 1 or even 2 QT's are low cost, as just a 15-20g tank with a small cheap light, heater and something for the fish to hide in is all you need.
Even a low light for corals is fine for a temporary QT.
