I upgraded to a larger tank and I’m currently going through the classic “ugly phase.” I transferred some live rock with zoas and other corals, added new dry rock, and recently installed an Apex system. Over the last few weeks I noticed GHA and scrubbed most of it off, but now I’ve confirmed I’m dealing with Ostreopsis dinos. I also noticed my nitrates and phosphates were very low, so I dosed to bring nitrates up. My parameters look good overall, but the dinos are taking over. I believe they killed my bristletooth tang, that I had for two weeks.

I have a 24W UV arriving in a few days and I’m hoping that helps get things under control. Based on my current readings, do you think I can beat this with stable parameters and the UV running? I’m worried about my clown, wrasse, hawk, and even my coral.

There’s also a frag event in about 10 days that I was planning to buy a lot of coral from, but I’m nervous given the current state of the tank. I should have the UV installed before then.

Any guidance would be appreciated. I also wish I had installed UV from the start. I didn’t realize how essential it could be.

You should also look into dosing silicate and bottled bacteria (specifically Microbe Lift Special Blenf). Others recommend dosing hydrogen peroxide.

If you have Dino’s on your sand bed then the 3DReefing UV sand sweeper works well provided you treat each area for the requisite amount of time.
