Over uv sterize ?

I bought a uv light to getrid of alge, this unit can treat 500 gallons, i have a 55 gal tank. Am i ok?

I bought a 36watt for a 65gal.

I have 80 watts unit which has been running for close to 1.5 yrs now. Keeps the water crystal clear. It will not kill any algae that does not pass thru the unit.

I dont know if this is just me thinking about it, but when you kill bacteria in the water you add ammonia and nitrates and further reducing cycling of ammonia and nitrates with a UV.

I personally wouldn't want to use a UV because I don't want to kill the bacteria that might be useful food for filter feeders. :)

UV sterilizers will kill all bacteria that passes through it, good and bad, they are not discriminatory. It will not reduce algae growth in the tank. It only affects the water that passes through it.
