Hey everyone, I have a question about installing an overflow for my sump

My tank dimensions are 55 gallons
48 L
13 W
24 H

So naturally, my tank is pretty long and narrow. I’ve seen people install their overflows on either end of the tank, but I wonder if this would be problematic in my scenario since my tank is 48 inches long and having an overflow on one side or the other, may not be the best

I’m thinking I should just try to center it on the back of the tank so that way there’s an even ISH 24 inches on other side of the overflow .

Does this even matter? Advice welcome - thanks!

I drew a little
Diagram of the options as well

This is probably a very silly question, but I just want to ensure that I get this right

It really doesn’t matter, honestly! Check my build thread for context; that’s a 6ft long tank with a right side short pane (peninsula style) overflow!

You just need something helping with flow on the opposite wall; this is what we have wave makers for!

You can plumb overflow through the back wall if you don’t want the tank pressed tight against the wall, and are willing to leave several inches behind the tank for plumbing… otherwise, I prefer the peninsula plumbing to push the tank up closer to the wall!

Awesome thanks!!! What wave maker would you suggest I use to get that water across 4 feet? And should I place one on the other end as well? Thanks!!!!

It might come down to personal preference, but I prefer my overflow centred. This hides the overflow somewhat, and completely hides the pipes that might otherwise be exposed if the overflow is on the side.

Pretty much any propeller style pump will work! The jebao wave makers are cheap and reliable! — they’re also DC, so you can adjust flow! Something around 1,500gph-ish would work fantastic, and can be turned down if needed!

Unless you’re getting a far better deal on a two pack of wave makers, I’d say start with just one on the opposite wall from the overflow and return, making the water “swirl” in the tank…

If more display flow is required, you can always add a second wave maker later!
