What's the size of your tank? What do you plan on keeping in the tank?

Generally, the following are good guidelines (the only important one from table 2 in most people's minds is Nitrate):
Table 1. Parameters critical to control in reef aquaria.

Table 2. Other parameters in reef aquaria that aquarists may want to control.

A lot depends on if tank if fish only, or mixed reef or reef .
Safe ranges are :

  • Water temp: 77°F - 80°F (stay close to the middle of this range)
  • pH level: 8.1 to 8.3
  • Alk: 8 to 11 dKH
  • Salinity: 1.024 to 1.025
  • Nitrate < 5 -10
  • Ammonia < .025
  • Phosphate < .04 - .06
  • magnesium 1300-1350
  • Calcium 400-450

It not as much the level (pick one set) it’s how stable and unchanging you can make them.
Example, for my Alk, she holds at 200ppm (11.5 ish) no matter when tested, so I don’t try and change that. Same process all others.
Keep them all steady especially Salinty.
