I just sold a coral here and received my payment through paypal. However right after the buyer completed the payment, I was notified by paypal that the buyer filed a dispute. I have never seen people doing this to me. Is it normal for the buyer to do in order to have a layer of protection? Or is it some type of scam that I need to deal with? What shall I do?

If you haven't sent the item I wouldn't. Maybe they had buyers remorse and didn't want to ask for a refund. If the item was already shipped, just send paypal the tracking information and you should win the dispute.

No. I haven't ship it out yet. I just don't understand that why the buyer would file a dispute right after sending the payment. Or the dispute was automatically placed by paypla?

Did it say there was a dispute? I noticed over the past year when I sold more paypal would periodically hold money from the account as a protection for them and had nothing to do with the buyer.

I have started moving money immediately after payment into my checking account. If a refund needs to be applied, it's easy enough to do from there. I want to eliminate any way of a buyer doing this. I'm guessing this is just a paypal issue. At least you haven't sent the items out yet. I have heard of folks selling, getting payment, shipping, and then having the buyers do this to get the coral AND their money back. Getting the funds directly out of your paypal account assures you that they can't be taken. Paypal can take funds back from your paypal account....but not your checking account. Just a thought.

Sounds dirty to me. There definitely shouldn't be a paypal dispute against you. Especially since item hasn't been shipped yet and even then there should be communication before doing so. I do the same thing as Craig to protect myself against fraud. Transfer the funds to the checking account. Sometimes paypal freezes your funds for over a month even though you are the one being wronged. Very frustrating. Hope everything works out for you Frank!

Well. I did communicate with the buyer. The person claimed that he/she didn't file a dispute. I later on got a message from paypal saying the paypal just selected this transaction for review. I don't why paypal wants to do that. Maybe it's because the buyer sent it to me as a gift.

Now I know the buyer is innocent. What shall I do now? wait till the meny get cleared or go ahead ship the coral today? Thanks for everyone's oppion and cares.

This has happened to me a few times on ebay. I sell an item and paypal holds the money for 2-3 weeks then releases it. Its pretty annoying. It doesn't have anything to do with the buyer as they aren't even aware this is going on. I just proceed as normal and next day ship the item and wait for paypal to pay me. The first time it happened i was pretty po'd. But if you wait for 2-3 weeks before you ship to the customer they are going to be po'd.

Is there any chance that Paypal decides to refund the money back to the sender? I would lose money and the coral if that's the case.

This is a new thing that paypal is doing. Has nothing to do with the buyer so you should ship the item. It is paypal holding the money to make sure you are not a scammer. They basically make sure that the person receives the item. I bought a little portable tv once and the person turned out not to be legit so paypal had to refund me the money. I have a feeling they were losign a lot of money this way so this is a way to combat this. Even if you have 100% positive feedback they still do this and typically I have noticed when there are more transactions occuring.

Just ship the item to the buyer as it is not their fault.

From what I can tell it seems funding is just randomly held. People don't usually "gift" me the money for the football tickets I sell but I assume it would be the same.

Thanks for everybody's input. Yes. the buyer is innocent and I have to keep my words. I will go ahead and ship it out today as scheduled and wait to see what happens then.

I can understand why PayPal might want to do this, but IMO, it could easily become a big turn-off for sellers.

Thanks for your info. It makes me feel better now.

Paypal is getting scummy and starting to find more and more ways of holding on to peoples money. They are just like any other bank and use peoples money to invest in loans and other investments, This is just another way they dug up to be able to use your money longer. Its absolutely sad. They do it now with most Ebay sales and hold the money till 3 days after the buyer recieves the item, that can be a couple of weeks or longer. Looks like now they are starting to do it with more and more transactions. They act like they are the good guys looking out for the buyers but really they just want to use your money for other investing. If in all your transactions prior you didn't screw a customer why would you be a threat now? Its a load of crap.
